Chapter 28 - Brothers by Heart

  • Zara
  • Someone once said, “Whatever sin you commit, totally enjoy it because, either way you’d still be punished if you do or don’t.” This is why I was going to enjoy the kiss between myself and Zack. When his hot breath fanned across my lips, I was filled with libido. I wished I could actually go to bed with him.
  • Yet, I waited for him to feel the same way. If I wanted to spend the rest of my life with someone, there had to two-sided love, not one-sided.
  • The kiss was like a drug. Even though I was the first person to kiss him, he quickly dominated using his tongue. Instead of giving in, I took over again. This made him grab my waist firmly.
  • It was at that moment I realized the song had finished playing. The dance was over and the lights had started to come on. I untangled myself from him.
  • That single moment, I knew my face was heated. I probably would be red all over like a tomato.
  • Taking a step back, I stared at him shyly, waiting for him to say something. Apart from that apology kiss back on the island, this was the first kiss I had given him genuinely.
  • I waited and hung on.
  • We just stared at each other. It was like the whole world stopped us.
  • Just the two of us in our own little world.
  • I found it hard to believe that I actually once hated Zack. Perhaps, I never hated him; I just loved to hate him. . .
  • “I have to go.” I first let out. And, like a coward who refused to face her emotions, I ran off.

  • It was under a hot scorching sun I had received the message that my services were needed back at the palace. Immediately I was told that, I dropped my axe. I had bid Diego bye and promised to tell the king of his jester abilities.
  • Man, I was really going to miss my partner. In the last three months, I had learned the importance of hard work, division of labor and unity.
  • I had also told Diego to try to solve the issues between himself and his wife. I believed beneath all the stone-faced nagging she gave him, something lurked just waiting to be fixed.
  • He hugged me tightly saying, “Not brothers by blood, but brothers by heart.” Meeting some people in life at times, made or marred you. If anything, Diego made me.
  • I felt excited.
  • I was going to see Maya. My greatest joy was that I would buy her presents for her upcoming birthday next year. The drive to the royal palace was the usual.
  • The royal chauffeur passed the bank of Spain, some resorts and malls before we reached our destination; the palace.
  • As the chauffeur halted to a stop, I came down from the car. The palace looked the same with an exception of the servants packing some leftover material. From how things looked, they definitely celebrated a banquet, threw a ball or feast. I ordered some servants to carry my luggage. The perks of being a head guard of the king’s chambers, I guess.
  • The note the palace had sent contained that all had been resolved and I could resume with my duty. It stated that when I arrived, I was to pay respect to each member of the royal family. I did exactly that then debated if I should actually go see Fernanda or not. Man, it was like jumping into a flame intentionally.
  • And, I wasn’t ready to get burnt. This was why I instead sort to see Maya, my little sister.
  • When I entered her room, like the smart girl she was sitted on a chair, writing on a table. Her hair shone as the light from the window radiated on it. She was wearing a light pink dress with butterfly embroidery illustrated on it. She looked up randomly, unaware of my presence.
  • Surprised, she looked up again.
  • “Brother, Ale!” She called out. I smiled at her, taking in the pink and white ribbon on her hair. Dolores was really doing a great job as her nanny. She made her look like royalty even if she wasn’t. “How’s my little girl doing?” I asked, completely opening my sets of white teeth. I had missed her. “Little? I’m a big girl now. I will soon be a teenager!” She retorted happily, engulfing me in a big tight hug.
  • “Okay, how’s my big girl?” I asked her, correcting myself.
  • “Your big girl is fine. While you were away, Doleres taught me how to knit. She said as a girl, I must know how-to do-little things like that,” Maya paused. She inhaled. “But… I don’t want to learn how to knit anymore. It sucks! I want to invent my own unique space ship. It’s going to be able to carry over 1 billion species, you know.” She continued.
  • I stared at her with amazement. She reminded me of my mum. My mum was just as stubborn as her. She had wild dreams too.
  • “Don’t worry, Maya. I’m not going to allow Doleres force you to knit anymore. Now I’m back, I’ll buy you all you need to achieve your dreams.” I encouraged. I liked when females stood up for themselves. Man, I never appreciated when they were made to succumb to primitive beliefs. That was how my mum raised me.
  • “Thanks, brother.” She said cutely. Her hands took mine and she directed her gaze to the piece she had been writing. As she narrated her plans of inventions and what she had researched, I looked in admiration at how smart she had become.
  • My mind wandered to Fernanda. There was something about her in the same palace with me that was threatening. It was like she hung around my neck like a burden I didn’t deserve and never wanted to carry.
  • I wanted a real life with a girl that I loved. Not someone who made me oblige to her deeds by threatening me.
  • I was going to stay in Maya’s room before I figured out what to do about Fernanda’s clutches which made me wrapped beneath her finger.

  • The morning after the feast, turned out bad for me. I woke up on the wrong side of the blanket. Following the fact that the whole household in the royal palace was awoken very early by 6:00am on the dot. The large bell which was unused since my stay here was rung. It vibrated through the thick walls of the palace.
  • Elizabeth, the second-in-command of my ladies-in waiting, barged in my room. This left me alert. I had sprung up from the bed the moment she entered. Searching under the duvet for Zack, he was nowhere to be found.
  • Maybe he had gotten up early.
  • Why didn’t he wake me though?
  • “Good morning, princess.” She hurriedly said.
  • “Why so early, Eliza? Where’s Mary?” I asked half-yawning. She moved closer whispering. “Esmeralda ordered the whole family to come to the altar for worship. She made Mary make the arrangements alone. I’m afraid you need to get ready now, Your Highness.” Elizabeth replied. She moved to my closet to get me something to wear.
  • Since I needed to be fast, I used a mouth wash for my mouth and hopped in the shower. The water dripped down my back as I washed my body. I took care not to wash my hair cause there was absolutely no time to dry and treat it. Doing the basics, I was out of the shower. I wore my robe and stepped out.
  • By the time I had gotten to the room, Elizabeth already had my clothes set. I took in her choice of clothes; s neon green gown that stopped below my ankles. It had a sweetheart neckline and hugged my body. Its lower part was flayed just after my waist.
  • Instead of questioning the dress choice, I quickly put it on. I must say I had really changed during my stay here.
  • Making use of the shawl she had set, over my head, I hissed at the huge disturbance it caused me. Although, I later removed it. Shawls or scarfs weren’t just my thing.
  • I wondered why Esmeralda had called the household by this time of the day?
