Chapter 24 - When things go unplanned

  • A/n Hi guys, enjoy!!
  • -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Zara
  • If there is anything I loved about the royal library, it was the deafening silence. That silence your moments to meditate and contemplate your thoughts and emotions. I already had a good novel in my hand. I laughed after admiring the words written by Jane Austen.
  • The words go as, “The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” I totally agreed with this. Though during my life on the island, I had no access to a good novel but my life itself there was a novel.
  • Really.
  • Isn’t it what it needed? A heroine in distress getting lost with the hero… Then… I don’t know.
  • Zack?
  • Could Zack be my hero? Absolutely not.
  • Not when he could never love.
  • “Welcome back, my princess.” I looked up at the direction the voice was coming from. It was Lucas, the Liberian. He had not changed at all. His corporate black suit which complimented his leather shoes. From the way they shone, one could argue that it was made by the stars itself.
  • “My God, Lucas!” I spilled out informally. I stood up to give him a hug. The hug is friendly and welcoming… I had not even expected it to be this.
  • “Yes, princess?” He replied.
  • “How have you been?” I asked. “Well, lately I’ve been okay. How about you? I heard of the ship wreck. Thank goodness you survived it.” He said again. “Oh, thanks!” I said. If only I knew if the others survived too.
  • “Though we got reports that not all survived.” I cringe at his words. Some people didn’t survive? How was it that I just found this now?
  • Guess people didn’t want to traumatize us both (myself and Zack) by reminding us of the incidence.
  • “N-Not all survived?” I stuttered bewildered. I never thought no one wouldn’t survive. Since the wreck was quickly noticed, we all went off board through the boat.
  • And, then I had told Zack to rescue some people. Even though the wreck had been my fault.
  • “Yes, princess. It’s really heartbreaking. You see, those were people’s families. But no one cares. No one did anything about it.” His words are well said and thought.
  • Although a part of me feels guilty. I couldn’t help but wonder what could have really happened if I hadn’t instigated Zack. Or I hadn’t tested his patience with the captain.
  • “I want to see their families.” I said briefly. This earned a look of surprise from him. I could tell he didn’t expect any of that. “Are you sure you know what you are asking, princess?” Lucas tried to confirm to be sure. I couldn’t help but wonder what he thought of me. Soft hearted? Weak? I was anything but that.
  • “Off course, Lucas.” I let out sure. I didn’t want to look back, thinking I could have done this, or I could have tried that? I wanted to start taking charge. Cause, it was all me. this was my life.
  • “Okay, let me go prepare the royal car and entourage.” My eyes narrow as I watch him try to stand up.
  • “No, what? No, Umm. . . Can we not just go without any grand appearance?” I hurriedly advised. I really hated it when I intimidated the middle class with looks or money. That was just so unfair.
  • “What are you saying, princess?” He asked open mothed. “I’m just a librarian. If I get caught, then--“
  • “You won’t, I promise. We could disguise, if you want.” I said without thinking. Disguising wasn’t a bad idea. Since that was what I was good at. I’ve practically done that since I was a child anyway.
  • “Okay, then.” Those two words are a quick mumble. But, I ignore the fact that it is. “Time to plan, then.” I said winking at him. He, with reflex, gave a rumble that vibrated from his chest, into a fit of laughter.  Guess he wasn’t used to seeing this side of me.
  • Zack definitely was.
  • Okay. . .how exactly did I think of Zack?
  • I quickly narrate the plan to him. It was summed up as this. Since it was 1pm, we take some money from the safe then do everything before dinner by 7pm. Sounded fair, right?
  • But I guess it was easier said than done. After I’m done telling him, I quickly sprint to my room to get my disguise materials.
  • ***
  • I watched as Lucas talked with Zack. Since the glass was a see through one, I was so sure that Zack could see me too.
  • At every attempt of his to take the list, Zack kept turning back to him. I had just known I had to do something… Real quick…
  • “One!” I said to myself but loud enough for both of them to hear. I faked a stretch and a yoga pose in my gym attire, clinging to a pot of lilies. If anything, I hated lilies. But, I had to endure it. I am allergic to them, that’s why.
  • I looked at them though the corner of my eyes. Zack hadn’t spared me a glance neither had Lucas tried to take the list. The list, itself laid on his well-polished table.
  • Not until all of a sudden. My eyes start to get teary. I had tried distancing myself from the lilies but it was already too late. My body begun feeling hot all over. My legs started becoming wobble and mushy. My knees definitely betrayed me this time. It twisted and slowly begun to give out.
  • A hand wrapped around my waist. It spread jolts and bolts of electricity onto my skin. I knew that feeling… Only one person dared gave me that feeling… Only one gave me those butterflies. Especially in the pit of my stomach, even though I was having a breakdown.
  • Zack Moretti.
  • “Zara, are you okay? Hey, Zara. Look at me!” He called out. I tried to focus but couldn’t. Believe me when I said I tried. Yet, I don’t know why my hands are closing involuntarily.
  • Peace.
  • That’s all I saw till I gently give in.
  • ~ ~ ~
  • By the time I woke up, all I saw was white. White environment and clothes moving around. My vision blurred and I rubbed my eyes to clear it. Where was I? I asked myself.
  • Where was everyone?
  • My head felt bloated and abnormally calm. I looked by my right only to sight Zack. He had a look of worry plastered on his face. It’s a bit funny by the way his coal black hair covers an eye. He had this seemingly devilish look.
  • This goes on for a while. I’m about to face opposite and bury my head in the pillow. Then he spoke. “Not so fast. Mind you tell me what the hell happened back there?” He asked. My eyes widen in shock. How much did he know?
  • Did Lucas tell him anything?
  • Could someone tell me where the hell I’m meant to start from?
