Chapter 10 - Island Formentera

  • Zara
  • I woke up to the breeze evading my senses. Everything seemed so chilly. I look up the clouds and discover it was still morning; so early that the sky was darkened a bit. I couldn’t believe I had just slept on a shore.
  • I sigh. The water looked blue and magical and the beginning of the shore had a bluish pink lining especially on the soft sand. Wondering what happened to the other crew members, I get up slowly looking for Zack. I had remembered he was with me on the lifeboat and that he definitely drove us here.
  • “I see you’re awake!”, a voice yelled at me. I turned around sighting him as he drew closer. He had no clothes on except for the piece of trousers the rode on his waistline.
  • “Where are the crew members?”, I ask glancing at him.
  • “We lost them. They probably ran for their lives”, he said. I’m still trying to recover from yesterday. Knowing the ship wreck somewhat my fault. If I didn’t do anything stupid like I did, trying to seduce the captain just to spite Zack. God! I was so stupid…
  • “And, where are we?” I say. I was being nice to get answers from him. Guess after I knew the necessities, l’d switch back.
  • “You don’t know? You find out for yourself”, he said and walked back to his former position. He was carving something out of a pine tree. I looked around. There were so many pine trees. Trust, I had researched on Island Formentera. Pine trees? There were so many pine trees…
  • “Impossible”, I muttered under my breath which earned a low-key laugh from Zack. I walked to him as he carved some pine.
  • “Are we on Island Formentera?”, I deliriously asked. He smirked a bit and wiped some sweat off his forehead.
  • “Is that a rhetorical question or you just want to be sure?” I face palmed myself in anger. Couldn’t he just answer my question with simplicity? Why did he always have to make everything so complicated?
  • “Just answer, the damn question!”, I yelled. I couldn’t believe we were having this conversation. I never really talk to him only if I found it necessary. And right now, it was necessary.
  • “Is that a threat, wife?”, he asked. I knew he was just saying it to spite me. But luckily, I calmed myself down.
  • “Call it whatever you want”, I said slowly then carried on. “Where are we?”, I asked again trying to be nice.
  • “Island Formentera and guess what sweet? We are lost”, he announced painfully. I felt my heart stop as I cringed inwardly. This was all his fault.
  • “What?” I asked to no one in particular. “We can’t be lost? Someone is definitely going to find us. We are royalty.”, I say. I am presently trying to convince myself that we weren’t lost. We couldn’t be. I couldn’t be. I mean what if we starved till death and rot? What if we faded away and we are forgotten?
  • “Look at this in reality, Zara and stop acting like a child”, he says. For a moment, I glare at him in disgust for calling me a child.
  • “I’m no child, Zack. I’m 21. I don’t know why you think so highly of yourself”.
  • “You feel I think so highly of myself? Fine, I wasn’t the one stupid enough to try to seduce a ship’s captain”, he retorted smartly as I blinked in confusion. Was he trying to blame me for all this?
  • “The hell do you mean?”, I asked just to be sure. He sighed and carved more and more before he looked at my direction.
  • “Even if you wanted to spite me, you could have done that with a crew member not a captain. A captain controls the heart of a ship.”, he seethed dropping the pine stick he was holding and walking up to me.
  • “Wait, are you saying all this is my fault? You started this when you flirted with a maid, knowing you had a wife”, I say defensively.
  • “And I told you not to do anything stupid. If you had just obeyed me for once, none of this would have happened”, he said tousling his hair back in distress. He looked a bit angry with the slight red tint on his cheeks which were normally perfect.
  • Perfect huh?
  • “So, you’re like a god now that I have to obey?”, I ask irritated at his words. He was just so arrogant. An arrogant bastard who expected everyone to do his bidding without complaints.
  • “I’m your husband”, he speaks out again. This was just so great! Weren’t we back to that again?
  • “And, I’m your wife”, I retort back immediately. This makes him smile briefly. One that could be easily taken painfully if you looked closely. Some tendrils of his hair fall forward loosely which was unusual because as a prince his hair was always groomed.
  • “Then act like it. Be submissive, Zara. You’re too hardheaded and you don’t pay heed to anyone’s word because you feel they’re against you”, he says.
  • “I won’t submit to you, Zack. You want my respect? Then you have to earn it. What were you saying about me being hardheaded? How about I describe you too – an aggressive womanizer who thinks so highly of himself”, I fold my hands with pride not regretting any of what I’ve said. Someone needed to tell him what he really was. “You think you’re always right and when someone tries to point your fault, you attack them by bringing them down and pinpointing their flaws”, I added furiously. I had to thank my stars that my fierce mum wasn’t around to do her usual ear pull, dirty slaps or smacking. She never really cared if her children were grown ass adults and always considered us as her little babies she could always correct when wrong.
  • Oh, I wish George, my older bro was around the corner to defend me from this figure in front of me.
  • “You think you know about me in just one week? It has been only a week, Zara and you talk as if you’ve known me for a life time, mi esposa”, he says cringing his brows in confusion. I hated to admit I was a bit wrong at that knowing him angle. Besides he had an attitude too.
  • “Whatever”, I say dismissively.
  • “Why did you agree to this marriage? Oh, let me guess – your reputation because that’s all you care about”, I utter.
  • “What are you trying to say?”
  • “You could have refused this marriage then maybe, I’d be at peace. You know how society is – once a man rejects a marriage, they’ll probably blame the woman and call her a whore but once a woman rejects a marriage, they’ll say she’s ill-mannered and spoilt. This was why I couldn’t refuse this betrothed marriage. So, tell me, why didn’t you reject it?”, I questioned again. It seemed like this dude in front of me was practically deaf because he made me repeat a question again and again before he actually answered.
  • “You don’t understand”, he briefly says and begins walking away on the soft white sand. I followed after him in his foot path.
  • “Then make me”, I reply quickly as I felt the coldness of the sand underneath my leg making some parts glistening.
  • “You were my childhood crush”, he says. I’m lost for words as I leave my mouth open in shock.
  • Okay… I definitely didn’t expect that.
