Chapter 45

  • Randy had parked as close as she possibly could to the point she would be going down. He wanted to be able to see her. Of course, once she was over the edge there was no way he could. She waited until it was completely dark before even getting out of the car. There was a campfire with lots of people, so hopefully anyone around would be drawn to that. After chatting with some regulars, she found out she had an hour before anyone from the grounds would wander by.
  • Looking one last time at the car, she stood there for a moment and checked everything again. The backpack was strapped on, and for this part of the trip it was really light. She’d tucked the bag she’d had the rope and harness inside, so it wouldn’t be found lying around. The walkie-talkie was clipped at the top of the shoulder strap so she didn’t have to reach too far to talk. Her harness was on, the rope tied off and fed through properly. She was ready...as much as she’d ever be. She pushed the talk button as she went back over the rail she’d tied the rope on. “Wish me luck,” she said quietly. The small speaker squawked once.
  • The first five feet were probably the hardest, as she had no real place to brace herself. She took her time; she had a full hour. She felt along with her feet for small indentations to rest in each time she moved herself. It was dark and she didn’t need to be smacking her face on some sharp rock—or brush against anything yucky for that matter. Pausing, she moved the hand that wasn’t squeezing the clamp for dear life, and pushed the talk button. “So far, so good. I’m clear of the edge now so it shouldn’t take too long.” She looked beneath her into the fading blackness. The walkie-talkie squawked once.
