Chapter 8 Escape

  • Chantria
  • I opened my eyes when I felt someone tap my cheek. I opened my eyes slowly until I could see Carleigh's worried face. When I looked around, I realized that it was not a dream.
  • I was already outside the overturned car while Carleigh was trying to pull Chanel out who was still unconscious. That's when I felt pain all over my body. I don't even know what part hurts because I feel like I have a wound all over my body.
  • I tried to stand up, but my body just screamed because of the pain so I lay down on the grass again. I adjusted my vision because it was out of focus. It's fading and it's like I'm going to lose consciousness again in just a few seconds.
  • Honestly, I just want to close my eyes and sleep because my body is so heavy. But I know that I shouldn't. Something's wrong. I can feel it. Just the way Carleigh looked at me earlier, I knew something was wrong.
  • "Wake up, Chantria," said Carleigh. I could tell the tiredness and pain in the tone of her speech, but she didn't care. "We need to get out of here. We're not safe here anymore.”
  • "What's happening? This is not the way back to our house.”
  • "I know." He looked at the behavior of the driver who was now also unconscious. "I didn't have a choice."
  • At first, I didn't understand what she meant. But when I realized that the driver was dead, my chest gradually became filled with nervousness.
  • "Someone's after our lives, isn't it?" I ask for confirmation. And when she didn't answer, I knew that was her way of telling me that I was right.
  • We tried to wake up Chanel who opened her eyes. But compared to Carleigh and me, she really didn't have the strength to walk alone. There was nothing we could do but lead her out of that place. We need to carry her if we need to get out of here alive.
  • We hid in a grassy part of this area when Carleigh insisted on going back there alone.
  • "Don't go," I stopped her. "What if they are here to kill us? We need to stick together!”
  • "I'll be right back. I promise.”
  • I was still having second thoughts about her leaving but I couldn't do anything. She was so eager to leave. She ran back to where our car was while I just prayed for her safety. I can't leave Chanel alone here especially when she lost consciousness again.
  • She didn't have deep wounds, but she had scars on her body. What I'm afraid of is that she might have an internal wound that can't be seen with normal eyes. We need to go to the hospital as soon as possible.
  • I stopped when something exploded not far away. I held my mouth when I realized that the explosion came from our car. Tears flowed from my eyes as I looked in that direction, hoping I might see Carleigh.
  • I almost ran in her direction when I saw her heading toward where we were.
  • "What happened?" I will ask. "What was that explosion? Are you hurt?"
  • She immediately shook her head. "I set the car on fire on purpose, so we need to get out of here before they see us."
  • "They? Who are they? Is someone trying to kill us?”
  • I helped her lead Chanel out of that place. I saw the tension in her jaw as she just looked straight at the road. "Someone is trying to kill you, Chantria. It seems like they already know who's going to inherit dad's business and they're already making their move.”
  • I involuntarily gulped. There is nothing else on my mind aside from what could happen to us, to me, at this time. My brain hasn't even fully processed what happened to us earlier. Except for the pain in my body, it was like I was in a dream.
  • Everything feels surreal. It's like I'm in a dream and I'm watching myself and what's happening around me. I don't even know where we are going now. I just let Carleigh drag Chanel and me to a safe place.
  • Or if there is even a safe place for me.
  • When I heard Carleigh cursing softly, I was brought back to reality. In front of us is the road. It was only then that I realized that we had been walking in this grassy and lush area for a while now.
  • "What is it?" I will ask. I don't know why she stopped because I didn't see anyone around. I feel that whatever appears in front of me now will frighten me more. I don't know what can happen.
  • "It's a road. We need to look for another way to sneak out. Maybe someone is waiting for us on that road."
  • We took the long path. Even though my body was screaming from the pain, I didn't mind it. I have to follow what Carleigh says. She knows what to do in times like this. She's not taking up criminology for nothing. Apart from physical strength, she is intelligent. She can solve difficult puzzles like this.
  • Normally, I can, too. But because I was so winded because of the safety of the three of us, my brain really didn't want to work. Even though she said that I was the target of whoever it was, I was still worried for both of them. They could get dragged along with this danger.
  • I almost screamed with joy when we saw an abandoned building. It's not that big and half of it was a bit worn out. But since it was getting dark, I was just thankful, and we saw it. It wouldn't be good if we kept walking in the dark like this.
  • "Look after Chanel," she ordered. "We need medicine for our wounds. Don't ever leave here. Don't even answer anyone who comes but me. Okay?”
  • "Why don't we just go to the hospital? It'll be safer.”
  • She immediately shook her head. “I'm sure they're close by. I need to call dad or Joaquin who can help us. Other than them, I don't trust anyone else. Just listen to me, okay? I'll not let anything hurt you two."
  • I stopped myself from crying. I knew that I needed to be strong in times like this. But I couldn't understand why I just wanted to cry right now. If not for Carleigh, I might just cry until the people who wanted to kill me see me.
  • When I calmed down, I checked Chanel's condition. She was still unconscious. She had several wounds and scars on her body but she had no deep wounds. I feel that it is also because of shock that she is still unconscious.
  • Apart from the pain in my whole body, I also didn't have any deep wounds. There was nothing I could do but wait for Carleigh so we could treat them.
  • I feel so weak and useless right now. I can't do anything but think of running away. I don't even know what to do. I want to yell at myself if only we weren't in this situation.
  • I looked outside when I heard a rustling sound. I peeked a little, cautious. Maybe like Carleigh said they were here to find me and confirm that I was dead. I didn't know who they were, but I wouldn't trust anyone but my twins and dad right now. Why was it that I didn't have my phone with me now when I really needed it?
  • "It's me," said Carleigh before emerging from the dark side of the building.
  • I breathed a sigh of relief. "Let's clean Chanel's wounds first."
  • We treated her quickly before ourselves. Besides medicines, she also brought food and drinks. When I looked at her, she was already holding a cell phone and was continuing to type. She seemed to be calling someone but no one answered. She almost threw it if I hadn't stopped her.
  • "Maybe there's just no signal in this part," I said. "We have to leave here because they might find us. Surely, we can find a signal out there. Let's just pray that we'll find it sooner than those guys."
  • She clenched her fist as she tried to calm herself down. But another rustling sound made my heart beat faster again.
