Chapter 70 Blood Out of a Stone

  • Monday the 1st of October began like any other day. I was trying on dresses with all the old gang, Steisy and Esme and Afri and even Saray and Malu, and they were all oohing and aahing while I twirled and strutted.
  • "You look beautiful," Malu said, wiping tears from her eyes, and just as I was about to thank her I found that there was something wet dripping down my chin. Something wet and bloody. I raised my hand to my mouth to cough and a handful of gleaming white molars came out. They made a thudding noise when they slipped between my fingers onto the floor.
  • I woke up in a cold sweat, running my dry tongue over my teeth dazedly to make sure they were all still intact. If my yaya Bely or any other old, superstitious woman was to be believed, dreams were highly symbolic and my teeth falling out of my mouth meant that someone close to me was going to die. Then, suddenly, I felt hot sick rising in my throat and I had to make a dash and vomit into the cool porcelain toilet until only acidic, watery spit was left.
