Chapter 39 New Territory

  • The bed was too hard, and that's what woke me up with great cramping pains. My own bed in the San Bernardo house felt like it was stuffed with goose feathers; the mattress had come brand new and was something like elastic memory foam or whatever they called it. I always slept face-down with one knee tucked into my chest, turned away from the window, but even then I had the curtains drawn and the shutters down so my beauty sleep wouldn't be disturbed. Sleep was my only release and I wasn't going to give it up.
  • The third and most telling indicator was that there was a warm, snoring body next to me, and this stranger had flung an intrusive arm over my torso while I slept. I peeked under the rumpled covers and saw, horrifyingly, that I was naked and there was a throbbing pain between my legs.
