Chapter 3 Maybe a Librarian

  • I twisted out of my seat and scooted it aside to reach up on the shelf and pull down the hard file for the Meridian account off the shelf of blue folders that indicated our bigger shareholders.
  • Logan Walker is a bigger shareholder.
  • Porter came over. His tall frame towering over me as he reached for another folder on the shelf above. His arm brushing mine as he reached. His chest nearly against my back.
  • I glanced over my other shoulder to see I still had the file up on the screen. Nervous he’d see it was up and suspect I was more alarmed about this account then I should be.
  • Though he paid no more attention to that fact, than he did the birds outside the window.
  • He doesn’t see anything but the folders.
  • He stepped next to me and flipped the one he held open to scan a few pages before setting it back on the shelf and pulling another one off to take back to his desk.
  • Leaving the scent of some woodsy cologne in his wake.
  • Calm down. I told myself. Trying to rationalize.
  • Logan is the danger.
  • My ex-husband and my relationship were so strained that I foresaw him either blackmailing me with the info, until I repaid every penny, which I wasn’t even sure I could right now…
  • Or he’ll prosecute. Which sounded even more terrifying.
  • It’s okay. Porter is the only one that knows.
  • I looked across the desks at him again. Lifting a mug that said “Everything has a place. And coffee goes here.”
  • It was the dumbest saying I’d ever seen on a mug.
  • Every bit as boring as he is.
  • Porter is safe. He won’t tell anyone. He won’t raise an alarm…I just have to fix this.
  • Porter is safe. I reminded myself to slow my breathing and relax.
  • I couldn’t think in the panicked state I was in.
  • Just when things were getting unbearably comfortable, they got worse.
  • ***
  • Logan walked in. His short, stalky frame built for looking good in a suit. Wide shoulders and a tapering waist.
  • “How is everyone this morning?” He boomed. As though expecting everyone would answer.
  • I clicked on the minimize button and opened a separate screen to hide that I’d had the Meridian account open.
  • We all answered him in our usual fashion. Grumbling good morning.
  • Porter not even acknowledging he’d walked in. Along with Rita who I suspected had, had a brief and bitter affair with Logan at some point.
  • Poor woman.
  • Logan aimed straight for my desk and dropped his hip along the edge of my desk twisting toward me as he leaned far too close.
  • Why is everyone in my bubble today?
  • But it was a stupid question. Porter never noticed anyone’s bubble. He was always just focused on whatever he was working on. And Logan?
  • Logan gets off on crowding me.
  • He seemed to think it made me uncomfortable because he couldn’t imagine I no longer desired him. But I didn’t. Suddenly the smell of his sport body spray seemed far too potent stinging my nostrils and it didn’t exactly compliment his own body’s smell. Which was a bit bitter because of all the spicy food he enjoyed. He had jet black hair and a perfectly manicured goatee which he’d always said made him look ‘pirate handsome’.
  • I’d have agreed back when I was young and dumb. Now I just thought it looked cheesy.
  • “What do you want Logan?”
  • “Aw, Baby…” He leaned over to cup my chin and lift my face up to him.
  • Annoying the shit out of me.
  • “You know what I want.”
  • “Logan I am here working for you. Not your toy.” I reminded in a hushed voice.
  • “You rather liked being my toy.” He pouted.
  • “No, I did not. I tolerated it.” My lips whitened. “Until I didn’t.”
  • When I’d found out he was cheating on me with some woman I’d never even heard of. So stereotypical it was painful.
  • “Come back to me, Baby. They say you never know what you have…”
  • “You had your chance, Logan.” I hissed. “Now get your hands off me.”
  • “Keep in mind, Angie Baby, that I let you keep on working here.”
  • “You didn’t have much of a choice.” I reminded. “Since we agreed, I wouldn’t pursue half your worth on the condition that I remained here as a working CEO.”
  • “Which I allowed.” He said slowly. As if speaking to a small child.
  • I hate when he does that.
  • “I could give you a bit more of the cut, Angel.” He offered.
  • “For what?”
  • He pursed his lips.
  • “You know what, Angie Baby.” He nodded toward his lap purposely.
  • “I’d rather choke to death on a dead rat.”
  • He frowned. “You don’t mean that. I know you still want me.”
  • “Actually, I don’t. And I would enjoy my day a lot more if you would stop doing this every morning.”
  • “You’d miss me.” He whined.
  • “Like I’d miss a toothache.”
  • “Angie, how long you going to be mad?”
  • Forever.
  • I looked at this annoying, sniveling wretch of a man and noticed the way he constantly scanned the room looking for prey, and wondered how I could’ve ever wanted to spend my life with him.
  • I was young and foolish. My mind offered the excuse.
  • He stepped behind me to twirl my ponytail. Leaning over to say. “Come over tonight.”
  • “Zero possibility.” I opened another account and began working. Engrossing myself enough I didn’t even know when he went away.
  • My cellphone rang from inside my leather bag. I frowned at it and refused to touch it. Looking up I saw, Porter peering at me over his thick silver glasses.
  • “What?”
  • “You get a call every morning this same time and never answer it.”
  • “Mind yours, Porter.”
  • He tilted his head grudgingly and went back to checking accounts.
  • Perhaps I wasn’t the nicest to him, but he never seemed to care.
  • Porter doesn’t care about anything but numbers.
  • I tried to picture what kind of girlfriend he might have but found it more likely someone as quiet and put together as him would have a boyfriend.
  • Or maybe a stuttering librarian.
