Chapter 9 Bella - Martin 9

  • Martin
  • "Martin, my lovely boy. It has been far too long."
  • My mom walked into my office, tall and stylish and, as always, immaculately dressed. My mom was a formidable opponent. I kissed her on the cheek before extending her a seat.
  • "It's always nice to see you, Mom."
  • It shouldn't be like that, but it wasn't her fault. It was because of her husband, my dad, who had a lot of means of annoying me, getting under my skin and pushing my buttons. Today, however, it was just my mother, dressed in a customized gray dress and suit jacket. Her hair was flawlessly swept up, and she wore her usual pearls. Her signature scent filled the office.
  • "You look beautiful; are you going somewhere?"
  • She sat and waved my question away. "I'm constantly on my way some where else. I really want to see my favorite son while I was in the neighborhood."
  • I leaned against the edge of my desk. "Do you inform your other sons about this?" ”
  • "Oh, they've dispersed all over the place. I see them even less frequently than I see you. You're my one and only chance to have grandkids. They're too preoccupied with business."
  • The company. My smile became more tense. The notorious business.
  • "And it's because of this that you're my favorite. Did you know Mikel had a talent for tap dancing? He could have made it big on theaters."
  • I burst out laughing. My inconsiderate jerk of a brother singing and dancing in a theater made me laugh. I began to wonder if he did not follow in my father's footsteps would have made him a happier, an a better person.
  • "As if Dad would have agreed to that." He barely permitted me to attend medical school."
  • "Oh, he didn't have a choice. As I previously stated, you were my last chance."
  • “What? That does not make sense—"
  • “Dr. Lawson," said the intercom. “Doc, Ms. De Guzman, is–"
  • Bella stepped in, wearing her coffee shop attire, her hair pulled up into a ponytail with strands falling out. My heart skipped a beat when I saw her. She offered a paper cup of coffee.
  • "Martin I–" She came to a halt, her eyes widening as she glanced at me, then at my mother, who had turned to her, her brows raised in curiosity. “Oh. I apologize. Mia informed me that you did not have a patient. ”
  • "I'm sorry, but I don't have a patient." That's my mother. Metzger, Helena."
  • Her mouth was as wide open as her eyes. "She's your mother."
  • I really can not figure out what she was trying to think. Was she frightened when she met my mother? One of those relationship steps she was completely unprepared for? Having to meet the family was a significant event. Why had she walked into my office without knocking? This was a first.

  • "I'm sorry, I don't even have a patient. That's my mother. Metzger, Helena."

  • I really can not figure out what she was trying to think. Was she frightened when she met my mother? One of those relationship steps she was completely unprepared for? Having to meet the family was a significant event. Why had she walked into my office without knocking? This was a first.
  • My mother gave Bella a scary smile. It made me feel uneasy. She raised her brows at me before returning her gaze to Bella. I could even see her thinking. My mother was constantly scheming, and I didn't wish Bella to be a part of it.
  • "You're not interrupting anything and everything that can't be interrupted," she said flatly, examining Bella from head to toe. She was capable of being clever, but she didn't want to be. "Aren't you a lovely young lady?"
  • Bella blushed as she ducked her head.
  • "Thank you; that's very considerate of you. I can see where Martin– Dr. Lawson's charm comes from. I was only passing by to bring him a cup of coffee. I'm aware of how hard he works."
  • "Were you trying to bring me a cup of coffee?" I inquired, skeptically. She'd never done anything like that before without first consulting with someone. It had to be an excuse for her not showing up for our meeting tonight.
  • She cocked her head at me, her eyes hard and gleaming. "Well, why not, Dr. Lawson?" Isn't it true that I'm the girl from the coffee shop? ”
  • “Bella…”
  • "Oh, don't worry, I probably wouldn't take any more of your time," she said, her eyes welling up. She rushed across the office and shoved the cup into my hands, leaning over the desk and getting too close to me.
  • “Dr. Lawson.”
  • Then she spun around and is now at the front door. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Metzger. Please accept my apologies for interrupting. I should have called first." The door squeaked shut, and I stared.
  • My mother chortled. "I didn't raise a dumb son," she explained. "You should go after her and offer an apology for whatever you just did."
  • "Goddamnit," what my mother said was true. I pushed away from the table and dashed after Bella, capturing her in the corridor before reception. I snatched her wrist and yanked her around to face me. Her eyes were clearly filled with tears.
  • "Please accept my apologies. Bella. I didn't really mean to do that. I cupped my hands around her face and managed to wipe the tears away with my thumbs.
  • "What do you mean to do? Would you be surprised if I stormed into your office? Did you tell your mom I was the coffee girl? That is to say. Isn't that what I am? It's just the coffee lady. And then I brought you coffee and we kiss, right? ”
  • I ignored Mia, who was staring down the hall at us with her bright, inquisitive black eyes, and grabbed Bella's arms.
  • "You're more to me than that, and you know it. I want you to be." I leaned in close and spoke quietly. This was a medical clinic. There were doctors, nurses, and patients, as well as nosy receptionists. But if this was the only place I could talk to her, I needed to speak to her here. "I was afraid you were come and will tell me that you wouldn't be able to meet with me tonight." I assumed you were dismissing me. "I pretended to be a dickhead."
  • She shrugged her shoulders and rested her head on my shoulder for a moment.
  • "You didn't, you didn't. You were correct the entire time. I'm the one who's been keeping you at bay. I'm the one setting precautions and barriers in our relationship because I'm afraid of getting too close to you. I'm just the coffee girl, and we're just chilling. You should not introduce me to your mother as if I were your girlfriend, because I am not."
  • She choked and gulped forcefully. "But I'd like to be."
  • She let her hands slip to my waist as I tensed my fingers against her arms. "Do you? ”
  • She gave a nod. "Martin, I didn't come to bring you coffee. That was just an excuse. You are correct; you consume far too much coffee, which is detrimental to your health. I came to inform you that I will be seeing you tonight. At your location."
  • I let out a sigh of relief that I'd been attempting to hold in all day since I'd given her that hilarious ultimatum.
  • "Are you sure you're not breaking up with me?"
  • She shook her head and bit her lip.
  • "Thank you, God."
  • I couldn't stop laughing and kissing her.
  • “Martin!"
  • "She was taken aback," she said. Her face has regained its flush. I adored the way that blush made her cheeks rosy and her eyes sparkle.
  • "You're on the job, Dr. Lawson" she chastised.
  • "And you're actually my girlfriend, Bella." Doctors are permitted to have romantic relationships. Is that correct, Mia? " I asked, not looking down the hall to see the receptionist, who I was certain was watching and listening.
  • "That's right, Dr. Lawson. In addition, we already knew Bella was your girlfriend. We've been discussing it for weeks."
  • Bella hid her face behind her hands. I leaned in and kissed the top of her head. "Return to work, sweetheart. I'll see you later tonight."
  • She let out a calming breath and smiled at me as she dropped her hands.
  • "OK, fine. You must confront your mother. I don't believe she purchased the coffee girl line either."
  • "She most emphatically did not. I suppose this relationship is progressing. You met my mother and were not frightened."
  • "It takes more to frighten me." Actually, I liked her. She's stunning. And tenacious."
  • "You've got no idea," I said. That was a significant understatement. "I'm glad you agreed to come over, Bella," she said, her eyes twinkling.
  • I wanted to tell her I loved her, but it wasn't the right time. No, not yet.
  • "Until tonight," I winked at her, and she flushed even more brightly.
  • My mother was waiting for me when I returned to my office.
