Chapter 5 Chase Denvor

  • I’m happy to be home, being away for 4 years in University made me home sick. I love the City life but it’s never compared to the life at the farm. There is freedom at the farm, fresh air and the smell of trees, flowers and manure it just calmed my spirit. The feeling to be home.
  • I’m turning twenty eight this year and my father believes I’m ready to take over the business so that he retires. I’m the only child for Denvor family and they have high expectations for me. My father raised me and groomed me to be like him one day. He also says I should take a wife and he already has a wife for me only that I have to be home to ask for her hand in marriage.
  • My parents are still old fashioned these days we should have a say on who we marry, we want to marry people whom we love but my family will have non of that. And I have to obey my father because this is important to him and he expects me to listen anyway. I park my car in front of the gate under the tree where there is a nice shade.
  • “ Aaah welcome my son you are earlier than we expected” I jumped my father gave me a scare I was in deep thoughts I didn’t notice him coming behind me.
  • “ Father how are you, you almost gave me a heart attack ” I greeted my father giving him a hug and shaking hands. My father was getting old and you can even see it from his eyes that he was tired. I really needed to take on the responsibility. He was home during the holiday and I want him to rest at home from now on.
  • “ My son my son welcome, how is your Auntie in South Africa, she will definitely miss you now that she is left all alone” I stayed with my Auntie in South Africa doing my University studies. She will definitely miss me as I will miss her she is a lovely woman.
  • “ Where is mum I hope she is not in the farm during this time of the day” I asked my father, my mum works a lot and no one can stop her if she wants to work day and night.
  • “ She should be in the kitchen I left her preparing your favorite meal, she is excited about your arrival”
  • “ I miss her so much” I said looking at the kitchen thinking how much I missed my mum. She still treats me like a baby. Being an only child she treats me like a glass that can fall down and break any minute.
  • “ She misses you more, come on let’s carry your bags and go in” my father said opening the boot.
  • “ No father I put the car inside when the sun goes down and then I will move the bags in, it’s a bit of a distance from here” I knew my father will help me to carry the bags and I couldn’t let him carry the bags they were so heavy as I carried almost everything for half of the Village. I have friends here who I grew up with and as I was in school I purposely did part time jobs to get presents for all of them without my father’s money involved.
  • “ Are you two going to stand outside the whole day” my mum said from the kitchen door. I ran like a small child to my mother’s arms.
  • “ Mama how are you, I missed you so much” I said giving my mum a tight hug.
  • “ Welcome my son, I missed you too and please don’t break my bones” I smiled and let my mum go, I loved her so much.
  • “ Come on in inside i have finished making food” my mum was a great cook thus the main reason my father loved her. Old people you will never understand them. The reason their marriage keeps on standing is just because of respect for each other nothing more. For us we need love, we want to feel I can’t start to imagine how my life will be like without that feeling in my marriage. And thus what my parents have decided for me. I sat down but deep in my thoughts. I didn’t even hear my mum talking. My father had to pat my hand.
  • “ Son what’s on your mind” my father asked with a concerned look. I chuckled my parents are so concerned about me that a small thing bothers them a lot. I shake my head as I spoke.
  • “ Father I’m thinking about the person whom you said you have found as my wife to be, would I fall in love with her or like her in that matter” I looked at him as if pleading him to change his mind.
  • “ You will definitely like her, love you will grow as you both get to know each other, the most important thing is to respect each other and your marriage “
  • “ Who is she father, I have searched the entire village for the person you described as an angel I can’t find one or maybe they moved here after I have left for SA” I was not even sure there is anyone that perfect in this village. My father described an angel to me.
  • “ Aaaaah Aviva Sunders” father said when my eyes widened I didn’t even think of her because she was not my mate. I was almost 11 years older than her she must be 16 or 17 at the most.
  • “ Father she is not even my mate, she is too young for me I wonder why she never crossed my mind “ Yes Aviva was indeed a nice and very respecting child we have known in our village. She respected everyone as much as she respected her mother. But I never felt anything for her. And she is a glass in her family’s eyes. She is the last born and the pride of Sunders. She is not really beautiful in the face but her kindness makes her so much beautiful and even her structure any man will die for it. But I have never thought of her in anyway. Insteady I always had a crush on her step sister Stella. She was beautiful but very wild but she always made me loose myself whenever I saw her. She was actually 24 now. I wonder how I will feel if I see her again but my father have set eyes on her step sister. I can still suggest her to my father but I need to see her first just to know if I still feel the same.
  • “ She is the right age for you my dear and we are going to see their family tomorrow we have already sent the message to them” my father shocked me.
  • “father was that really necessary we could at least wait a week or two for me to get to meet her and know if I like her”
  • “ Rubbish you don’t have to meet her she is perfect for you and this family period” my father was stubborn, maybe I should suggest Stella insteady.
  • “ aaah father what about her sister Stella at least I had a crush on her when I grew up and she is almost my age mate” I suggested looking down.
  • “ Not Stella she is too wild and spoilt. Her mother spoiled her too much. She will not make a good daughter in law if this family. Aviva is finally Son come on let’s eat” my mum didn’t say a word about the matter. I didn’t know what to think. Tomorrow I’m going to propose marriage father is too much.
