Chapter 14 A Change of Job

  • “Well, of course, you’d have to do three times the workload as well!” Tang Xiao paused as he rolled down the window. His tone was originally ambiguous and he even deliberately accentuated the word ‘workload’, instantly causing colors to creep upon my entire face.
  • I immediately walked away, too lazy to be bothered with him. To my surprise, he actually drove slowly accompanying me while ignoring the people honking behind him.
  • “Tang Xiao, what are you trying to do?” Struck with irritation, I stopped and glared at him.
  • “I know my Mandarin is not bad and my ability of expression is pretty good as well. You should know what I want to do. I can tell you that you’ll never get this opportunity again if you pass up on it. It’s three times the salary you know…”
  • After hearing Tang Xiao’s words, I knew that I really needed a job to start again even though I hated his frivolity a lot, or otherwise, I would really end up sleeping on the street.
  • For this reason, I gritted my teeth and stamped my feet. “Alright, I’ll do it!”
  • He nodded with satisfaction. It was probably because he saw the wound on my forehead that his eyebrows began to frown again.
  • "How did you get hurt this time?"
  • Touching the wound on my forehead, I smiled wryly and told him that I accidentally walked into the door.
  • “Why are you so clumsy?”, he muttered, and forced me to get in the car so he could bring me to the hospital again.
  • I repeatedly refused him, saying that it was no big deal and I could just go by myself.
  • To be honest, I really needed this secretary job but I did not want to have too many contacts with Tang Xiao. After all, being acquaintance with him was already a mistake and if I continued to have anything to do with him, it would only mean that something was wrong with me.
  • My determined refusal seemed to have angered him as his face began to turn grave and started to give me chills.
  • “Get in the car!”
  • Just four short words and it was already intimidating enough for me to get in the car.
  • With my neck shrank, I got into the back seat of the car. From time to time, I glanced at the rear mirror and saw that he was looking at me, as though he did not believe what I told him.
  • Consumed by my guilty conscience, I bowed my head down, all the way until the car reached the hospital.
  • When the doctor saw me and Tang Xiao again, a meaningful smile once again appeared on his face, rendering me speechless.
  • “Miss Li, your wound doesn’t seem like you’ve accidentally hurt yourself, it’s more like…”
  • I quickly interrupted the doctor, in fear that he would say anything outrageous.
  • I sneaked a glance at Tang Xiao once again. He was sitting on the bench outside of the treatment room with a grave expression, not paying any attention to our conversation inside.
  • I breathed a sigh of relief. I did not want Tang Xiao to know such a humiliating incident.
  • The doctor said that my injury was not serious so he let me go back after prescribing some medicine for external use for me.
  • On the way back, Tang Xiao still had a grave expression on that handsome face, making me nervous with fear.
  • “Mr. Tang, thank you for taking me to the hospital."
  • Due to the awkward atmosphere, I opened my mouth and said.
  • Tang Xiao continued to drive his car without any care and asked where I lived now.
  • I told him I lived with my best friend now. He was surprised, and said he thought I had my own house.
  • Forcing a chuckle out loud, I brushed him off by saying that I was not from the city.
  • He no longer questioned me closely and directly took me to a Japanese restaurant.
  • I looked at the name of the restaurant. This was the most expensive Japanese restaurant in the city. I had once asked Jiang Zhigang to take me here but he refused right away.
  • "Mr. Tang, this is?"
  • Tang Xiao glanced at me from the corner of his eyes. “It just so happens that I had no one to eat with today."
  • I was pulled in by Tang Xiao. Even though I found it to be inconceivable, I almost drowned myself with saliva when I saw how lavish the dishes were.
  • I had not eaten well these days so without any regard for being reserved and polite today, I began to gobble down on the food.
  • Struck dumb with astonishment, Tang Xiao looked at me and asked why I could eat so much despite being thin.
  • I chuckled. “Well, of course I’m hungry after being imprisoned for so many days.”
  • Damn it! My mind was completely occupied by the food and I had subconsciously told him about the imprisonment.
  • I did not dare to look at him, only glancing at him from the corner of my eyes.
  • Sure enough, Tang Xiao managed to catch the word ‘imprisoned’ and asked where I had been in the past few days. He also said that he had learnt from Zhao that I had been out of touch for the past few days.
  • I slowed down my chewing and hesitated, not knowing what excuse I should use to brush him off.
  • With no other choice, I could only use my ultimate weapon at this time — silence was gold!
  • Burying my head, I remained silent no matter what Tang Xiao asked me. In the end, he could not get through me so he had no choice but to give up.
  • After dinner, he took me to the mall in the city and said that he wanted me to buy some new clothes.
  • Holding my slim purse in my hand, I complained dissatisfiedly about why I should buy new clothes. How wasteful it was!
  • Tang Xiao raised his brows and began to lecture me that I did not know anything and that as his secretary, I must be able to match him. He even complained that the way I dressed was too shabby.
  • I reluctantly picked two cheaper dress suits but they were put back by Tang Xiao.
  • After picking up the two most expensive sets, he dexterously paid for them, surprising me so much that my jaw dropped.
  • “Mr. Tang, this isn’t appropriate.”
  • I coyly refused the clothes bag he handed over but in actual fact, I was beside myself with joy.
  • He glanced at me in contempt and immediately poured cold water on me.
  • "The money spent on clothes will be deducted from your salary."
  • I instantly became dejected. With a sullen expression, I took the clothes and secretly cursed him in my heart.
  • “But… you can always pay it using some other things.”
  • Tang Xiao ambiguously accentuated on the words ‘some other things’, as the smile on his face gradually became wider.
