Chapter 14 Why Would I Fall For Lucian

  • I was confused. “Isn’t it against your company’s policies to work with other financial companies?”
  • Mr. Adkins then chuckled, “Not really. As long as the cooperation is profitable enough, I don’t see why not.”
  • “Alright then.” I figured that Mr. Adkins only said that because he wanted something from us. Nonetheless, I could not report him. After all, I was only there because of Lucian. He would kill me if he found out.
  • I was about to walk away when Isabelle rushed forward to grab my hand and whispered, “Thank you, Jennifer.”
  • I smiled in response before noticing that Shannon was glaring daggers at me. She must hate that I have stolen her thunder.
  • When I got to Lucian’s office, he was so busy working behind the large desk that he did not even look at me. It was probably because I was late.
  • Feeling guilty, I carefully placed the document on the desk. “Here’s the document that you wanted.”
  • He remained silent, so I pulled up a chair. Then, when I was about to sit down, he suddenly lifted his head and shouted, “You’re not allowed to sit!”
  • I was shocked, so I responded angrily, “What the hell? I was kind enough to get you what you wanted, so why am I not allowed to sit?”
  • After checking his watch, he replied coldly, “From the moment my secretary picked you up, you wasted more than twenty minutes. Do you know what twenty minutes are worth to someone in finance?”
  • It took me a while to figure out that Lucian was upset because I did not get him the document in time. He was in a board meeting, and they had to table a meeting topic because I was late.
  • “It’s not my fault that you left it at home. I did you a favor by fetching it.” I knew that I definitely shared the blame, but I retorted anyway before sitting down defiantly on the chair.
  • Lucian then furrowed his brows before shifting his focus back onto his documents.
  • Curious about Lucian’s investments, I tried to sneak a peek at his documents. Unlike our small-scale company, they probably invested in projects worth more than a million.
  • He noticed that I was looking at his documents, so he glanced at me coldly before tossing them toward me. “Since you’re so interested, why don’t you have a look at them? I’d like to hear what you have to say as a self-proclaimed expert.”
  • I noticed that it was a company reorganization case, and the tens of millions worth of capital shocked me.
  • Lucian tried to test me by asking me questions about the case. I did not want to be looked down upon, so I did my best to share my opinions as I even debated with him.
  • As the best financial expert in the industry, Lucian was way ahead of me, but I could see from his eyes that he was also impressed by me.
  • Even though I gave it my all, I lost the debate anyway, but his attitude toward me obviously changed for the better. “If you really want to work here, I’ll consider it.”
  • “Will I be working as a business director?”
  • “Sorry, I have someone else in mind for that position.” Lucian outrightly turned me down.
  • “Forget it then. I’ll stay with my little company.” I was jealous of that woman. Although she was still in Achula, Lucian had already made all arrangements for her. I was merely filling in the gap for her while she was gone.
  • At that moment, Lucian’s phone rang, and I could hear a woman’s voice when the two chatted intimately.
  • Lucian lifted his head to glance at me before going back to his phone call. “No, she’s not around. I’m at work right now.”
  • The two continued to chat for a while before Lucian hung up.
  • I looked at him and sneered, “That was your Achulaen girlfriend, wasn’t it? Why were you afraid of telling her that I was around? It’s not like there’s anything going on between us.”
  • After a moment of silence, Lucian stood up. “Let me walk you out.”
  • Lucian noticed that I was upset when we were standing inside the elevator. “Is something troubling you?”
  • I turned my head to the other side and ignored him. I did not know why I was upset either; it was probably because of that woman.
  • When we reached the first floor, Lucian stepped out of the elevator instead of taking it back to his office.
  • I kept my head down and followed him down the corridor. Suddenly, he stopped and called out my name as if he had something to say to me.
  • I could not stop myself in time, so I bumped into the man’s burly body.
  • I wanted to back off, but I ended up putting my arms around him for some reason. I hugged him tightly as if I were going to lose him forever.
  • Startled, Lucian kept silent for a few seconds before he tried to remove my arms.
  • I said nothing either. I just held onto him tightly and pressed my cheek against his back.
  • “Jennifer, we can’t be together. My heart belongs to someone else.” Lucian then pried my fingers off as he removed my arms before turning around.
  • He sounded unusually gentle when he spoke to me. “Grandpa will be leaving tomorrow afternoon, so we don’t have to do this for him anymore. Let’s go back to how things were before, okay?”
  • I bit down on my lips and looked deeply into his eyes before agreeing with him. Then, I lowered my head and walked past him.
  • I felt so stupid for doing what I had just done, so I took a deep breath before turning around and smiled. “Why would I fall for you? It was merely a joke!”
  • “Good.” Instead of making fun of me, Lucian responded to me seriously.
  • When I unintentionally glanced behind Lucian, I was met by a sight that stunned me.
  • Not far away from us was the restroom door, and peeking out of that door was Shannon. She clearly heard the conversation between Lucian and me because her eyes widened in surprise when she saw me looking at her. Shannon then quickly pulled her head back inside the restroom and closed the door.
  • However, I was not in the mood to ask her about the deal with Mr. Adkins. Instead, I quietly walked away.
  • Seeing how depressed I was, Lucian got worried, so he instructed the company driver to drive me home.
  • When I got home, Jack was flipping through the calendar. He told me that he wanted to pick a good day for Lucian and me to get married.
  • His words only served to make me feel worse, so I lied about how tired I was and went to my room.
  • I slept until Lucian woke me up when he got home in the evening. I rubbed my heavy eyes and asked, “You’re home?”
  • He seemed troubled when he responded with a nod. It was probably because he knew our relationship was coming to an end. “I got us some food from a hotel. Let’s have dinner.”
  • “You guys go ahead. I’m too sleepy for dinner.” I dropped back onto my bed as I pulled the blanket over my head.
  • There was a moment of silence before I finally heard his footsteps leave my room.
