Chapter 4

  • I couldn’t sleep at night. I spent my time watching boring YouTube videos to induce sleep but I couldn’t get to free my mind of all of these thoughts.
  • Nero left the moment I finished my food. He did not show up right after.
  • I didn’t answer his question. I couldn’t bring myself to. I denied that I was avoiding him. But then, can one admit that she’s avoiding one man because emotions are stirring up inside her? I don’t think so. I think I did the only choice I have.
  • I opened my email and noticed that I had two emails from Kino.
  • From: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: WE ARE GOING CRAZY
  • Hey, Ella! Where are you? Tell me now that I’m asking you directly before I hire someone to find you and get you back here in an instant.
  • That email was sent two days ago. I didn’t check it. I smiled. I know he would do it even if I’s answer him anyway. My cousin has a spy instinct. I know he’s already started hiring someone to look for my location.
  • I opened another email from Kino.
  • From: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE
  • Hey, Ella! I know where you are now and I’m contemplating on telling Uncle Kurt about it or what. He’s so worried about you. We are all worried about you. Please reply if you don’t want my men in front of your ocean front suite the first thing in the morning.
  • I sighed and clicked the reply button.
  • To: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: QUIT STALKING ME
  • I know you’d do it even if I told you where I was. I’m fine. Tell dad I’m okay. I’ll go home probably when I want to. I want to enjoy this freedom for a moment before getting caged again.
  • I rolled my eyes before sending my message. My cousin really knows how to annoy the shit out of me.
  • An email came again.
  • From: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: WHAT’S SO INTERESTING?!
  • I need the exact date of your arrival. We need you here. The models of the architects in the company bore me. I needed something to criticize.
  • I let out an angry growl as I typed my reply.
  • To: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: HOW DARE YOU CRITICIZE MY WORK
  • Hey you! I’m never gonna go back there if you continue to criticize my work. My works are precious. How about you try to draw something better than curvy and busty women?
  • PS: How’s dad, anyway?
  • I bit my lip at my last question. I don’t want my father to be worried about me but I needed to do this. I wanted to be independent and I wanted to travel. I wanted to explore the real world, and not just rely on pictures.
  • I sighed when Kino replied again.
  • From: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: CURVY WOMEN ARE THE BEST!
  • So what if I only know how to draw busty and curvy women? They’re God’s gift to the whole mankind! You should work your body too to achieve that kind of body, couz.
  • PS: Uncle Kurt is okay. Aunt Miranda is asking for you, too. She seemed worried too.
  • I smiled. Aunt Miranda is Dad’s second wife. He thought he would never find someone as kind and caring as my mother but he met Aunt Miranda and they clicked. I’m happy for them. And besides, Aunt Miranda is nothing like the stigma about stepmothers. She’s kind and caring. She treats me like her own child.
  • I wish they get to have another child after me so they would divert all their attention to him or her but I don’t think either of them wanted that. Aunt Miranda seemed okay with caring about me and Dad. I think she’s contented with it.
  • To: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: I AM CONTENTED WITH MY OWN BODY
  • I hate to break it to you but curvy women are not what men look after. You’re the only one who’s fascinated by them! Ugh!
  • PS: I miss Dad and Aunt Miranda but I’m okay. I’m better with the sea breeze.
  • I clicked send and looked out at my balcony. I didn’t bring my blinds down. I got out of bed and walked closer towards the balcony.
  • I was about to bring the blinds down, my eyes caught a familiar person talking to a woman with curves and only wearing her red two-piece bikini. I stared at them as they talked.
  • Nero was smiling as the woman occasionally hits his broad chest. Nero is topless and with based on the lights of the coast, he’s wet. Maybe he took a night dip or what.
  • I bit my lip as I watched them interact. They seem close. I looked closer at the woman and recognized her. She’s the other lady in the reception, other than Heart. If I remember it right, her name’s Lucy.
  • I heard some coos from the other side of the volleyball net. I can recognize Jules and Harvey. They are both cheering with some guys I know are from the kitchen.
  • They are teasing Lucy and Nero. Maybe they’re a thing? Well…I don’t know. And honestly, do I need to care?
  • I saw how Lucy slung her arms around Nero’s neck. Nero seemed stiff but he didn’t push her away. I took a deep breath as I feel my heart getting heavy. I pursed my lips in a thin line and brought the blinds down, angrily and noisily.
  • “Oh! Maybe we disturbed someone!” I heard a loud shriek from a girl that I think is Lucy.
  • I heard loud laughs before hearing apologies afterwards. I opened my fridge to look for something to drink to calm my nerves down.
  • I heard the email tone of my MacBook. I immediately walked to see Kino’s message. There were already two messages. Did I waste a lot of time watching that scene? Hmmm…
  • From: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: CURVY WOMEN ARE THE BEST! PART 2
  • I don’t know about men from other states but I think men from Illinois would choose curvy women over anyone. Anyway, you should look for some real hot men there. I heard Californians are yummy. :P
  • PS: I’m having a vacation leave soon and I’m thinking of going there too since I need to take pictures of you so your Aunt Miranda and Daddy won’t miss you too much.
  • I rolled my eyes and couldn’t help but think about Lucy’s curvy body again. Maybe that’s what Nero wants? Maybe he wants some curvy women like my cousin?
  • I looked down at my body. I’m not that curvy or busty. I’m just the average. But I have long legs. That’s the only thing I can fight over with.
  • I shook my head as if it could help in shaking all of my thoughts away. I opened the next email of my couin.
  • From: Kino Sloane
  • Subject: THE REASON(?)
  • Maybe this is the reason why you’re so happy and you’re so free there? Peace out, cousin! I love you! Good night!
  • Attached on the email is a photo of me and Nero in my balcony. This was taken today when he came here and ate food with me.
  • I glared at my cousin’s name. He really knows how to tease me. He really knows how to make my blood boil. There’s no doubt about that.
  • And wait! He even said good night!
  • I opened my Facetime and clicked Kino’s number. It’s ringing and I’m tapping my fingers on the mousepad of the MacBook.
  • I narrowed my eyes at his name on the screen. When I thought he’s not going to pick it up, he answered. I saw him smiling widely while on bed. He’s topless and he’s already under the sheets.
  • “How dare you send a private detective to spy on me?” I exclaimed.
  • Kino laughed instead of getting scared at my outburst. “I told you, Kinsella. I will find you. You must be thanking me because I’m doing everything I can for Uncle Kurt to not push his search and rescue operations for you.” He even sounded so proud. I can’t believe this!
  • “And you think I will thank you?” I asked back.
  • He nodded and smiled happily. “I saved your ass, cousin. You should be thanking me. If not for me, your vacation is over right now. You won’t even get to know that Nero Bennett more.”
  • I narrowed my eyes at him. He said Nero’s full name. I didn’t even know anything but his first name!
  • “Wait…” I trailed. “You had him investigated too?” I asked in disbelief.
  • He smiled and nodded proudly.
  • I shut my eyes and thought of nothing but what I would do to him when I see him again. “You’re impossible!” I exasperated.
  • He laughed. “Girl, with me, nothing is impossible.” He said proudly.
  • I crunched my nose with what he said. I narrowed my eyes at him. “You’re creepy!”
  • He laughed out loud. I watched him laugh for seconds and he stopped. “Do you know that man? Maybe he’s more or less than what you think he is?” He asked.
  • I just stared at him. Even if Nero’s more or less than what I think about him, Kino doesn’t need to worry because I’m going to stay away. This time, I’m really going to avoid Nero. For real.
