• On the plane, Miles was thinking about his mother’s circumstances. However, all he could think about was Stella’s every move and every expression. He was so engrossed in thoughts of her that his body reacted, so he had to cover himself with a blanket. In order to quell his desires, he started thinking about his parents. If his mother was indeed living in the basement, it meant that his father had committed crimes of bigamy and false imprisonment, which was enough to give him trouble.

Elliot must have wanted to trick the Houstons into believing that they had committed manslaughter in order to guilt-trip and prevent the Houstons from acting out any further. However, Miles didn’t understand why his mother needed to be locked up. Judging from how Mabel was willing to fake her own death for him, it was apparent that she loved her husband. She no longer needed to hide, and could even show herself in public after they moved to Canada. However, from Elliot’s treatment of her, it was as if he was locking up his archenemy.
