Chapter 5 Rose

  • Eve can hear the door knob realizing that Ezra must be home. She jumps out of the couch and moves to the hall to meet him. She is really nervous about the decision that was made, not sure if she knows what it is that she wants.
  • “You are still here” he comments when he sees her.“Shouldn’t I be?”, she says, disapproving of his attitude. “I thought you might have tried to run away”. Silence is spread across the room. She doesn’t want to ask the question but it is killing her not knowing.
  • “Are you waiting for something?” he asks. “Yes?” she is becoming annoyed. “Oh. Yes I remember. Here” and he passes a paper to her. It’s a certificate of someone’s identity.
  • “Eve Rose, resident of Alkalith”. “So, I’m staying?” she is shocked. “Yes, you are”. She isn’t sure how to react, but decides to feel happy for once in her life, smiling wide. “It even has my last name. How did you know?”. Ezra moves his gaze elsewhere, feeling uneasy.
  • “You will be staying with me. You will have to attend the Academy of Magic. Since you know nothing of it, I will teach you all about it this summer before school is open”.
  • “Magic school? Seriously?”.
  • “Yes. Is there a problem?”. She pauses and sighs. “It’s just, everything seems to be moving too fast. I’m not sure if this is a dream, or my imagination”. Ezra moves closer, trying to comfort her. “I guess, all these seem unfamiliar, but, I’ll make sure you feel right at home. This is the truth, you were just unlucky till now. Pinch yourself all you like, this is the reality”.
  • Eve smiles wide, her eyes sparkle, brightened by the idea that a new fresh chapter is about to unfold, not her cruel and miserable reality of a life.
  • “Alright. Training with me will be intense. I won’t go easy on you since you have to catch up with years of knowledge. Everyday from nine to nine. I’ll teach you all there is to know and unlock your type of Magic. Usually around your age the person finds what’s their form, alongside some spells”. Eve galps. All of this sounds too much but she knows she wants this. Magic was always a kid’s dream, but now, she can finally manifest her desires.
  • “Alright, that sounds like a plan”.
  • *An hour goes by*
  • The scream that sends electricity throughout her body, wakes her up from her day dreaming. She recognizes this voice, it’s Ezra. But not the calm tone she has witnessed, but an angry and evil one. A loud thumb approaches her, forcing her to stand up like a soldier. “Eve!”, he shouts and immediately she says, “Yes sir!”.
  • “Did you touch my stuff?!”, he demands to know, and now she realizes why he is mad. “It--it was an accident! I just went inside, I didn’t touch anything!”, she tries to make it less of a problem. “And what about the roses?!”, he yells. “What--what about them?”, she doesn’t remember in this clutter. “They were dormant, dead. Now they are blooming! Care to explain?”. She has an epiphany, remembering her interaction. “I’m sorry, I was mesmerized and sad seeing them this way. I just touched the glass and they instantly started moving and I even got pinched, look!”, she says, throwing her palm at him.
  • His face finally relaxes, yet, he examines carefully to see the little hole that is there. A sadness overcomes him, but also a sense of relief. “So it did work”, he thinks to himself. “Just, don’t touch my stuff please, ever again”, he says, calmly this time. “Well, the door was open. Not that this is an excuse, but I was nervous, I’m sorry”.
  • He touches his forehead, massaging the inner part of his nose canal.
  • “How many more things will I unravel by having her here?”.
  • ************
  • The training days are harsh, and the nights worse as she is tired and in pain. She had never thought that Magic training can put a toll on someone’s body. Learning how to manipulate the energy around to create a shield to protect her from enemies, or offensive spells to attack. But all these are just for beginners, and still, she hasn’t discovered her type of Magic.
  • “The magic of snow, known as Ice Magic, is a variation of the Water Magic. The people of the Northern Kingdom invented it trying to survive the hard environment they lived in. This form can’t be taught and is only passed from generation to generation”.
  • Eve reads the book that shows some of the forms they exist, Ezra’s idea, maybe helping her unlock her own. “This is your type, right?”, she asks for certainty, in which he nods. “What about me? We are mid through summer and I still have no clue. You said that my age is perfect for the Magic to settle and manifest”, she starts being concerned. He sighs, knowing that she is right. “It’s not always the same. I knew from the beginning what type of Magic I would wield. That helped me manifest faster than others”.
  • “And how did you know?”.
  • “My whole family are Ice Wizards. I knew that I would also be one”.
  • “Well, I don’t know about my family”.
  • Ezra pauses, silence spreads and Eve feels like he knows something he isn’t saying. “Well, you don’t need to know. It doesn’t work for everyone. Maybe I’ll find a way to help you out. For now go rest. It’s late”, and just like that, he dismisses her, making sure she won’t ask more questions.
  • Nightfall is upon them and Ezra is lying down on his bed. He has had trouble sleeping these past few months with Eve around. She always has questions that he avoids and at the same time he is afraid to care much. She is a mystery, and in one part he is the reason behind her existence.
  • And as he drinks a sleeping tea to help him fall asleep easier to sleep, a dream occupies his mind. It’s an elegant woman with eyes looking like petals of a flower. She is mesmerizing and he can’t keep his gaze off of her. But the scene changes, from their happy moment to her bound in chains, only for her death to come from a knife.
  • “You did this. No time for regret”.
