Chapter 19

  • “Well, this place is a dump and a half,'' Jazmin said as she took in her surroundings. They were sitting outside the Bull and Butcher, which was hardly what she called a pub – a few tables and chairs inside, no entertainment at all and it stank of stale lager, but the beer garden was nice enough. “It’s like we just stepped back in time. Rickety shacks for houses, all clustered together, kids running around barefoot, with dirty marks on their faces. Look, Hunter! Those houses there are actually leaning forward. Is that even safe?”
  • “Safe as houses, I expect. Come on, we got work to do. Sitting here admiring the dodgy architecture isn’t going to get us anywhere. I have to go meet someone. You make a start on trying to find something out about this woman, Katrina. I’ll meet you back here in four hours and Jazmin? Don’t be late. Something always happens when you’re late.”
  • Jazmin shrugged as she watched Hunter stride away, before bursting into a fit of laughter as she watched him rub his face then return to his usual, arrogant stride. “One of these days, I’m going to make sure someone knocks you down a few pegs, Hunter,” she mumbled before finishing her sour tasting wine. She hated the cheap stuff and despite Hunter getting a hefty expenses allowance from the Twelve, he never spent any more than was absolutely necessary. Pockets are tighter than a ducks backside and his arms are too short to bloody reach them. Cheap house wine and bug ridden rooms for us but I bet he has plenty to spend on that slut of his. Where the hell does he expect me to find this damn woman? Complete and utter idiot he is.
