- "Because it was what I wanted."
- "I'm really not that big of a doormat, Byron," I said, knowing there had certainly been many times in my life where that could have been said about me. I had always excused it as family obligation, as looking out for someone who obviously wasn't capable of looking out for themselves. But in my relationships especially, I had always taken more of a lead role, often being the one to end things when I felt they were going south, cutting ties when it was time, saving all the useless arguments, the resentment, the anger.
