Chapter 5

  • When Joseph was done with practice, he decided to give Olivia a call. It rang twice before she picked up.
  • “Hello?”
  • He heard her sweet voice say .
  • “Hey babe. Can you come over to my place?”
  • “Are you okay?” she worriedly asked, thinking he might be hurt.
  • “I’m fine. I just need to see your beautiful face.” he said, making her blush at his flattering comment.
  • “Okay, I’ll be there.” she replied before she hung up .
  • Joseph felt bad about lying to her and not telling her the real reason why he wanted her over at his place because he knew if he did tell her that they needed to talk about her weird behavior earlier today, she would have a million excuses not to come over.
  • “Mom, I’m going over to Joseph’s place.” Olivia informed her mom while putting on her sneakers.
  • “Okay honey, but please don’t stay too long and don’t do something stupid. You know what I mean." her mom warned, which only caused Olivia to roll her eyes.
  • “Bye mom!" Olivia said before gently closing the door behind her.
  • Olivia arrived at Joseph’s house and knocked on the door. The door opened, revealing Rachel .
  • “Hello honey, come in.” she greeted Olivia with a bright smile, which she returned before giving room for her to walk in.
  • “Thanks Rachel. Umm, is Joseph home?” Olivia asked .
  • “Yes. He’s in his room." Rachel replied, pointing towards his room .
  • “Thanks." Olivia replied then excused herself to go to Joseph’s room.
  • Olivia knocked on the door just to be careful not to behold a sight she doesn’t want to see yet.
  • Joseph stood up from his bed to get the door. He smiled as soon as he saw Olivia.
  • “Hey beautiful.” he said giving her a peck on the cheek which caused a blush to rise to her cheeks.
  • “How was practice today?” she asked as she walked into the room to make herself comfortable on his bed.
  • “It was fine.” he replied, sitting beside her on the bed.
  • “So… why did you call me over?” she quietly asked.
  • Joseph took a deep breath before speaking up.
  • “Olivia, I know that you’ll get mad at what I’m about to say, but I really need to know what happened at school today… Did someone hurt you or are you still sad about this morning?” he asked, hoping she’ll talk to him.
  • ‘ I should’ve known he wouldn’t rest until he knew what was upsetting me ‘ Olivia thought to herself.
  • “Olivia, please say something." Joseph pleaded .
  • Olivia thought of something to come up with, but she couldn’t think of anything.
  • “Joseph, I-um-we-um. We need to give ourselves a break."
  • She winced not believing she just said that. She had no other choice but to do what Jordan had threatened her to do. She knew she was hurting both herself and Joseph, but it’s what’s best for her. If breaking up with Joseph would give Jordan the satisfaction that he needs to leave her alone, she will feel a little better because she really needs her freedom from his constant bullying. That’s her being selfish but she has to do it.
  • Jordan was heading to the kitchen when he heard Olivia’s voice in Joseph’s room, he decided to eavesdrop on their conversation.
  • “What do you mean by ‘we need a break’ Olivia? I don’t understand you.” Joseph asked, confused by Olivia’s sudden decision.
  • “I’m sorry, Joseph."
  • “You don’t have to be sorry Olivia, just tell me the truth. Were you pressured to say this?”
  • “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Joseph.” Olivia lied, avoiding Joseph’s gaze .
  • Joseph was already getting angry and frustrated because Olivia wasn’t saying anything. He tried calming down so as not to scare her.
  • “Look at me Olivia.” he said, turning her face to look at him but she still didn’t meet his eyes.
  • “Please…” he pleaded before she finally met his gaze.
  • “Can you please just tell me who talked you into doing this?”
  • “Joseph you have to believe me, I wasn’t pressured by anyone."
  • “THAT’S A LIE AND YOU KNOW IT!” Joseph suddenly yelled, standing up from the bed.
  • He hated that Olivia couldn’t trust him enough to tell him the truth.
  • Olivia was shaken by Joseph’s sudden outburst. She regretted what she had said earlier when she looked in his eyes and saw nothing but pain.
  • Joseph squatted in front of Olivia and held both her hands in his.
  • “I love you Olivia and I don’t want to lose you. Please take back what you said.” he pleaded with a shaky voice.
  • Olivia was already in tears. Joseph wouldn’t understand why she said those words. She never meant any of it . She just wanted to look out for her own interest.
  • “Please don’t make this harder than it already is Joseph."
  • “Then tell me why you came up with something like this all of a sudden?!” he angrily asked .
  • ‘If only she could trust him to tell him the truth’ he thought to himself .
  • “It’s just… I don’t want you putting me first in everything you do or any decisions you make, Joseph." She said.
  • It wasn’t the truth but it wasn’t also a lie.
  • “I want you to think more about yourself.” she continued .
  • “I do think about myself but I also care about you. Don’t you get the fact that I love you and I don’t want anything bad happening to you? That’s why I get worried a lot."
  • He sighed then continued .
  • “Look Olivia, I know you’re only saying this because of the discussion we had this morning. I promise I’ll think about myself, okay? But please, don’t deprive me of knowing about what’s going on in your life. I’m your boyfriend and I need to know how you feel at all times, okay?”
  • Olivia only nodded in defeat, having mixed emotions, both of happiness and disappointment because there was no way she could convince Joseph to stay away from her. If only she could tell him that Jordan was behind all this, but it’s better this way, she concluded within herself.
  • “Promise me that you aren’t going to bring up this issue of us breaking up again."
  • “I promise." Olivia quietly replied, making Joseph relieved.
  • He gave her a kiss which turned out to be a lot more passionate, but Olivia stopped it before they would get more intimate because she wasn’t ready to lose her virginity, at least not yet.

  • Jordan got really mad after hearing their conversation. He just couldn’t understand why Joseph didn’t want to break up with Olivia.
  • “You’re going to pay for this Olivia, that’s a promise." he muttered to himself and went back to his room, not bothering to go to the kitchen as he had earlier planned.
