Chapter 6

  • I slumped on the ground in the cave and sighed. I hadn't spent so many nights alone in a forest in years. Even if I was freezing, heartbroken, and tired, I still enjoyed the serenity this place provided me. When it wasn't packed with turned, it was so beautiful. I could see the trees, the small animals on and around them, the mountain peaks in the distance. I glanced up at the sky and marveled at its beauty. It was finally clean and I believed it wasn't going to snow for at least a day or two.
  • When Wolf nestled himself next to me, my serenity left me. Even though I was sweating, cold, and at the same time feeling hot, his body warmth was going to be useful to help me defeat the fever. Now about his smell... That was a whole other topic.
  • I put my head on my knees and pursed my lips.
  • “You know why I prefer my human body and civilization?” I asked, turning my charm on. My eyes slipped to him and noticed the way he was looking at me. Like he was waiting for me to speak and he was listening closely. My skin prickled and I battled a smirk.
  • “Baths. That's for sure.” I chuckled and Wolf put his head on the ground. “The other thing is the safety there. It's not that people don't die there. They do. All the time. But it's not like in the woods. We don't kill each other just because we met or stepped over the borders. We don't lose our loved people or boyfriends like this...”
  • My eyes watered and stinging tears slid down from them. It was my fault. Only if I had told them to take the human way. Only if we hadn't entered the wilderness... A whimper sounded through my mouth and I ground my teeth, trying to stop it.
  • Wolf stood up on his feet and before I knew it, I was with my back on the ground, this enormous creature hovering over me. My heart leaped at my throat as I stared at his size. I felt like a small mushroom about to be crushed under someone's shoe. Or worse. I felt conquered and so overpowered.
  • He lowered his head and my eyes rounded by the gleam in his gaze. It wasn't arousal, was it? I looked down and before I could feel any relief, I jumped by his lick on my cheek. His breath nearly made me gag. But his tongue was so warm and big.
  • And it tickled.
  • “Stop it.” I giggled and tilted my head to the side. He had felt my pain and was trying to calm me down.
  • Mate licked my other cheek and I laughed.
  • “Mate! That's enough! I'm fine!”
  • I put my hands on his lowered chest and lightly pushed. When he didn't get my point, I pushed harder, but an irritated growl made me gasp. I couldn't relax. He wasn't my pet. He wasn't my therapy dog, nor was he my friend. I had to be careful and not let myself be distracted by his behavior. He was a beast.
  • “I need sleep,” I gritted out and turned to the side, putting my hood on. I really needed rest.
  • ...
  • When I woke up in the morning, Mate was sleeping right behind me, warming my back. I yawned and sat up, glancing at him. He was on his stomach, his slow breaths were moving his body up and down in a calming manner and his brown fur was emanating warmth.
  • I quietly stood up and stepped out of the cave. I wasn't running away anymore, but I still needed some privacy. When the winter sun hit my face I closed my eyes and enjoyed it for a moment. It was so much warmer than yesterday. And I was feeling better.
  • Throwing my clothes on a dry rock next to me, I lovingly gazed at the lake and its gleaming water. It was so clean I could see the soil under it. It made me rumble with excitement. I lifted my leg, touching it with a toe, and a shiver ran through me. Ugh, it was so cold, but I loved it. I needed it.
  • Slowly stepping inside, I bent over and washed my arms to help me get used to the temperature. This wasn't so bad. I smirked and knelt, letting the water cover my head. I scrubbed myself for a while, trying to get all of the dirt off my body, and started playing with the water. I sank in again and disappeared from the surface. After a few seconds, I shot up and shook my head, water flying off me.
  • “Oh yeah!” I laughed and pushed my wet hair off my face.
  • When something caught my eye, my smile evaporated from my face and I stilled. Wolf was at the shore, watching me like a hawk. There was something different in his eyes; something I couldn't understand and I hadn't seen until now. It was more rational than all the looks he had given me before. It was smart and... it made my skin prickle.
  • ...
  • After our hunt for dinner, we got back in the cave, but the space Wolf left between us made me uncomfortable and I quickly turned to my human body.
  • “Mate,” I breathlessly said. “Human body.” I put my hand on my still naked chest and repeated, “Human body.”
  • Then I touched his chest. “Wolf body.”
  • He followed my every action, sucking it in like a sponge. As if he was my student. Huh...? I scrunched my brows. Was that even possible? I gasped when I realized I was the only werewolf that had survived a few nights with a turned and had even slept together. I could provide so much information about him to my pack!
  • I took a deep breath and did the next step. The one I was afraid could risk me my head.
  • Waving my hand between us, I said, “Incompatible.”
  • Wolf didn't do anything at first. But then he lowered his head and snarled. Anger was booming behind his amber irises and I was afraid for my life. I straightened my back and fisted my hands.
  • “Human!” I yelled and pointed at myself. “But mate!”
  • His snarl disappeared and a whimper replaced it. By that point, I was certain he could understand some of my words. But... what exactly did that mean?
  • ...
  • I couldn't fall asleep. And it wasn't because I wasn't tired or sleep wasn't coming to me. It was because of the constant whimpers of the beast in front of me. He had spent the whole night like that, twitching and whimpering in pain. I had no idea what was wrong with him, but if he fell unconscious or something, I could start searching for a way back home. I had intended to do it by manipulating him into helping me, but if an opportunity to get rid of him showed up, I was going to grasp it.
  • I propped myself on my hands and rubbed my eyes when his whimpers increased. His body was twisting in pain and his head was hidden in the ground.
  • I frowned.
  • “What's wrong with you?”
  • Another whimper was his answer as he tried to crawl closer to me. My heart rate picked up and my eyes froze on him. His body was now literally twisting. His back and shoulders were taking unnatural shapes and I could hear the bones breaking in them. His heart was running in the speed of light, and for a moment, I wondered how he was still alive.
  • The fur started disappearing from his back and head and his paws became smaller. His whole frame started shrinking and when he lifted his head to look at me, I gasped. The muzzle was nearly gone and his amber eyes were shining in pain. His face took a more... human shape.
  • “Impossible!” I breathed out, quaking with this discovery and mind-numbing fear. This was impossible! I couldn't believe my eyes! Was I dreaming?
  • I blinked, and when I opened my eyes, hoping this all was just a nightmare, the wolf finished his transformation and turned into... a human! A big, clean-skinned human! His back was the first thing I saw as he was still bent over the ground. It was filled with scars and bite wounds from other wolves, clearly from the years he'd spent in the wilderness. His torso and arms were muscled and lean, and when he slowly lifted his head, I stopped breathing. Mousy hair, big amber eyes, straight nose, and strong jaw. His face was so fucking handsome, I forgot how to think. His hair was short, just like the stubble on his cheeks. Lifting himself on his arms, my eyes traced his hard chest, abs, and... Ugh, no! This was too much.
  • Crawling on his fours, he approached me, and from his lips came out a raspy sound, much similar to... mate.
  • Hold my beer, because I am ready to pass out!
