Chapter 43

  • Shiro's house welcomed Pheonix with open familiarity, as he strolled inside without bothering to ring the doorbell or announce his arrival. The two friends shared a bond that allowed for such unceremonious entries, and Shiro spared him any scolding for it. Pheonix caught up with Shiro in the living room, where the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared salad wafted through the air. A sizable transparent bowl held a vibrant mix of greens, while an imposing flat-screen TV commanded attention from its place on the wall. Pheonix's attention, however, was consumed by his own thoughts, and he barely registered his friend's words as he instinctively gravitated towards the kitchen. Without uttering a single word, he made his way to the fridge, seeking solace in the cool embrace of a beer.
  • "HEY. I didn't know you were coming to visit..." Shiro's voice reached Pheonix, stirring him from his reverie. "But it's a good thing that you're here. I was about to call you to talk about some important matters."
  • Pheonix retrieved four bottles of beer from the fridge, feeling their chill comfort in his hands, and proceeded to return to the living room. Settling onto the empty sofa, he twisted open the cap of his chosen brew, sensing Shiro's gaze upon him. The intensity of that stare prompted Pheonix to break the silence, his voice laced with a hint of weariness and frustration. "Do you have a problem? That's why you're here. It's now 7:45 PM. Did you eat your dinner before you drank?"
