Chapter 4

  • He walked out of his office and headed towards the elevator. He clicked on the button and stepped into the elevator, pushing the button to take him to the ground floor. As soon as it stopped and the doors opened, he walked out of the elevator and also out of the law firm.
  • His chauffeur, on seeing him, opened the car door for him after greeting him.
  • He slid into the back seat and loosened his tie. He was stressed out, after searching for ways he could use to help one of his clients in winning his case in court.
  • His briefcase was just beside him on the seat, so he opened it and brought out a file which held several information he had gathered for the case. He flipped through the papers one last time before keeping it back in his briefcase.
  • The drive home was smooth because it was already 9pm, so there were less number of cars on the highway.
  • The car started slowing down and came to a halt in front of a massive gate. His driver punched the security code and the gate opened. He drove into the compound and there beheld a huge mansion, with a water fountain and a large garden area, it also has quite a big garage space with several cars in it.
  • The car stopped in front of the mansion and the driver rushed out to get the door for his boss. He came out of the car and said a “Thank you.” to the driver.
  • He walked into the huge doors of the mansion and as he was on his way to the stairs, he was greeted by his housekeeper.
  • “Good evening sir. May I help you with your briefcase?”
  • He declined, instead
  • “Where is my wife?” he asked and the housekeeper replied,
  • “She isn’t home yet sir. I thought she was the one who arrived just now but was surprised to see you instead.”
  • “At what time did she leave the house?”
  • “She left since 1pm, sir.”
  • “Okay.”
  • As he was about walking towards the stairs, the housekeeper stopped him again.
  • “Sorry sir, but I also wanted to know if you'll be having dinner?”
  • He thought about it for a moment and decided.
  • “No, I'm fine. You can retire for the day.”
  • The housekeeper smiled and said,
  • “Thank you sir. Do have a goodnight rest.”
  • And she excused herself.
  • He nodded and started making his way upstairs.
  • He came to a halt in front of a door. He opened it and what came into view as he stepped in, was a master bedroom with a king size bed in the middle of the room and a TV facing the bed. It also has a vintage mirror just by the left side of the room. The floor of the room was made of fine wood and also, it was decorated with a very expensive center rug. It has a walk in closet at the right side of the room.
  • He walked towards the bed and dropped his briefcase on the floor. He concluded that he needed to take off his suit and wear something more comfortable, but before that, he needed to shower, so he stripped out of his suit and walked into the bathroom to take a quick shower. After twenty minutes, he was out, already in his sweatpants and shirt.
  • He contemplated whether or not he should stay up and wait for his wife to come back or he should just go to bed since the last time he stayed up waiting for her, it didn’t end well.

  • Tracy walked into the room with her cellphone to her ear
  • “I had a great time today. I wish we could do this more often.” she said while trying to drop her purse, and settled down in front of the mirror.
  • “Where are you coming from?” Richard asked, trying not to get more angry than he already was, because Tracy was supposed to attend a dinner party with him, which he held at their house, but she was nowhere to be found just hours before the dinner.
  • “I’ll call you back.” she said to the person at the other end of the phone and hung up.
  • “And how is that your concern?” she asked while taking off her shoes.
  • “Don’t you give me that for an answer. I asked you a question and I demand an answer.” he said still looking at his wife with his hands in his pocket.
  • She didn’t answer, instead, she stood up and walked into the closet to get her nightwear. He followed after her. As she was about taking her nightwear from the drawer, he held her hand to stop her.
  • “Answer me!” he yelled.
  • She snatched her hand from his grip and said,
  • “Look here. I’m not one of your employees, neither am I a maid that I'll have to explain myself to you. What if I did remember we had a dinner party and I ditched it for something else, what would you do about that, huh?!” she asked, looking him in the eyes.
  • “So, you did it on purpose?” he asked.
  • “Well, it’s fine. Thank you for embarrassing me in front of our guests. I should’ve seen that coming cos you’re always never home.” he said and walked out of the closet, and also the bedroom.
  • He went into his study to cool off. That’s what he always does whenever he and Tracy have their fights.
  • He sat down on the sofa in his study and sighed, thinking about how he never imagined to have this kind of marriage nor did he believe that his wife, Tracy, would turn out to behave awfully different from when they were dating. He always thought he would try his best to have a happy home like the way his dad, who was a very notable lawyer in the country did with his family.
  • His father always told him to make him proud, not only with the law firm as a successful lawyer, but also as a husband and father, which he thought would be possible, to give his father a grandson. But before that ever came true, his dad collapsed one day in his office while working. When the ambulance arrived, he was already dead.
  • He never thought he would lose his father that early, because Mr. Connor was only 55 years old. So, Richard Connor made a promise to carry on the legacy of The Connors’ law firm as one of the best law firms in the country, even if he’s just 29 years old and not quite ready to take up the family business. He would try his best and also be a good husband to his wife, but Tracy isn’t making things that easy.
  • He always thought that his beautiful wife whose family were friends of his family, would always be that caring and understanding person, like she was before they got married. But, it seems to him that she only did that so she would get him to marry her since her dad works for his father. She always loved fame, so it wouldn’t surprise him now that he has realized that she only wanted him for his family name and nothing more.

  • With that last encounter, Richard decided he wasn’t ready for another, so he drifted to sleep.
