Chapter 15 You Have to Stay by My Side

  • “Grandma, I can help the nurse to take Charlie’s pulse usually, but this is surgery. It’s better to let a professional nurse do it.” Summer turned around and looked at Rosie as she said awkwardly.
  • “Grandma, I’m your grandson!” When Edward heard Summer’s words, his stunning brows slanted as he glanced at Summer, who was standing on his left side, and protested. The sentence was simple, but the meaning was clear.
  • Upon hearing that, Rosie observed the unusual atmosphere between them. She raised an eyebrow and agreed, “You’re right. It’s better to let the nurse do it.” Her intuition told her that something must have happened between them.
  • Soon, the nurses quickly finished preparing the father and son for the surgery. Then, they started pushing them toward the operating room.
  • By the time they arrived, Summer still worriedly looked at Charles and reassured him, “Charlie, it’s going to be okay. I’ll wait for you outside.”
  • Charles nodded. “Mommy, promise me. After I come out, you have to stay by my side. I hope you’ll be the first one I see right after I wake up and, of course, Great-Grandma too!”
  • At his remarks, Summer and Rosie hastily nodded, promising his request.
  • When it was about time to go in, Summer didn’t manage to hold back herself. She approached Edward’s bed. Slightly awkward and embarrassed, she said, “Erm… It’s going to be alright.”
  • At that, Edward’s cold gaze darkened. Why is this pretentious woman comforting me? Huh, how ridiculous!
  • “Remember; your contract begins when I come out!” warned Edward with a voice only the two of them could hear.
  • Summer was caught off guard. Her body stiffened subconsciously. It was only until the father-son duo was pushed into the operation room that she finally returned to her senses.
  • He really is a devil!
  • Inside the operation room, the nurse informed them that they would be anesthetized in a moment. Edward looked at Charles, who lay beside him with knitted brows. “Scared?”
  • “I’m not scared!” protested Charles stubbornly as he frowned.
  • No matter how sensible Charles was, he was still a three-year-old child. Furthermore, this was a major operation. How could he not be afraid? Edward had no idea what he should do to comfort him. Therefore, he could only soften his tone. “Don’t you have something to ask me? You can ask me anything after the surgery.”
  • “Will you answer every question?” Charles turned around. There was a flash of light behind his eyes that Edward couldn’t read!
  • “No,” he replied monotonously, though there was no coldness in his tone.
  • Charles frowned at the answer. He couldn’t help but find his father difficult to talk to. However, strangely enough, the uneasiness and fear he felt earlier had subsided slightly. Is it because of his words? Subconsciously, he looked at Edward again. This man is my father.
  • Although there was no expression on Edward’s face, Charles still found himself no longer afraid. Is this because of our father-son bond?
  • Charles was still a child after all. Therefore, it took him three days before he finally woke up after the surgery.
  • Because he hadn’t eaten for three days and two nights, he looked pale—almost transparent. His lashes fluttered slightly. Even his lips had cracked due to the lack of hydration. They looked like wilted petals, eliciting sympathy from everyone who saw him. His dark short hair that was exactly the same as Edward’s made his face look even paler, presenting a morbidly ashen face.
  • It hurts!
  • Charles nearly couldn’t hold back his tears when he felt the pain of the incision. Enduring the pain, he lifted his hand gently. His surroundings were quiet—abnormally quiet.
  • When he put his hand down, he accidentally tore his wound due to excessive force. Immediately, he whimpered in pain, “Urgh. It hurts…”
  • Theoretically, the oxygen mask he was wearing would help him breathe better. However, at this moment, it only made his nose uncomfortable. He couldn’t resist the urge to remove it. Nonetheless, he was afraid to touch any of his body parts again, as he was afraid that he would tear a wound and feel the pain again.
  • Slowly opening his eyes, Charles once again confirmed that there was no one around him. He frowned at the realization, and a touch of annoyance quickly showed up on his little pale face. Mommy promised me that she would be here when I woke up.
  • “Mommy…” he called, but there was no reply. The creases between his brows deepened.
  • At this moment, he saw the door to the ward carefully being opened by someone. Then, a slightly surprised and thrilled face appeared behind the door.
  • “Charlie. Oh, my sweetie, you finally woke up. Do you know you almost scared me to death?”
  • Summer quickly put the teapot in her hand beside her and rushed toward the bed before she held Charles’ little hand carefully.
  • When the well-behaved and sensible Charles heard his mother’s words, he managed to force out a smile and complained, “Mommy, it hurts!”
  • “Don’t move, Charlie. I’ll bring the doctor here now. Wait for me.” After she said that, she quickly ran out of the ward in a hurry. Nonetheless, as soon as she opened the door, the doctors were already there.
  • The moment the doctors arrived, they began running several tests on Charles.
  • Summer’s fingers interlocked together as she clenched her fists. Worried, she prayed to God, begging for his help to make sure nothing would happen to her son. She knew God would definitely feel pity for her poor Charles.
  • After the examination, the doctors’ originally serious and troubled expressions finally relaxed. The surgery three days ago was very successful. Nonetheless, when Charles didn’t wake up twenty-four hours after the anesthesia subsided, they panicked.
  • Yet, the results of every test they ran on him in the past two days were within the normal standard. They had no idea why Charles didn’t wake up within the expected time, and it kept them on tenterhooks. After all, anyone would have trembled in fear when they heard Edward’s warning.
  • “If my son doesn’t wake up, all of you will have to die with him!”
  • His words from two days ago were still fresh in their minds. Rumor had it that the mysterious Young Master Edward showed no interest in his wife and son. But, why did he lose his temper? Still, no matter what the reason was, they didn’t want to find out.
  • Although Summer saw the doctors’ expressions relax gradually, she still felt like someone was grabbing her heart tightly. She was waiting for the results of the examinations. Three to four doctors were surrounding the bed, but none of them spoke. The atmosphere made her very anxious.
  • Eventually, she opened her mouth as she trembled and asked, “Doctors, how is Charlie?”
  • At her question, the doctors finally came back to their senses. Embarrassment glinted before their faces. One of them let out a cough softly and quickly answered, “Young Mistress Summer, after the examinations, it’s confirmed that Young Master Charles has recovered.”
  • Then, the doctor turned around. With a gentle smile, the doctor asked, “Young Master Charles, do you still feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
