• My heart stopped when one of the men spun the board, and the first item flew to Veronica. It was a wine bottle that hit the board next to her ribs. She squealed and closed her eyes. The hit reverberated through the room and made needles prick my cool flesh. Then, the next person threw a fork. It hit the board again.
• Laughter erupted among the crowd as bets were lost and won. This was like a joke to them. They were about to kill one of their own and acted as if it was just a game. I struggled to swallow as my throat tightened and made my eyes sting. I wanted to be one of them, I wanted to be with Jude and make him proud. But this… This was way out of control. Way into a dark zone I dared not step into.
