Chapter 7 Unseen Guardians 1

  • Grey woke the next morning to find the lady still asleep. He prayed, folded the sheet he slept with, strolled to the bathroom to have his bath, then left the room to get breakfast for them both. Grey hated cooking, he delighted in fast meals, and just didn't see himself as the kind committed to sitting in the kitchen waiting for food to be prepared...he could afford such patience at home.
  • Grey saw officers at the scene where Emeka had been killed last night. A boy he didn't know, he had the privilege to know his name as he fell to his end. Grey wondered why it was usually so. Within, he praised himself for his bravery last night, wondered how Emeka had gotten the hole in his head, then he thought, it didn't really matter...the guy was a pervert.
  • Grey bought breakfast from a woman he frequents to collect things from without paying, for she understood he wasn't working yet, and things were hard for him, she had the patience. Though, this time, her eyes slightly widened on noticing him pay in cash. She gave him the items without much questions other than how are you. Grey answered and thanked her, then went up to his room. On opening the door, there was a letter on the floor with a blue overall neatly stacked on the chair.
  • Grey walked into the room, the lady was still asleep. He closed the door behind him, set the breakfast items on the table, got the letter, then sat at the table to read it.
  • Dear Mr. Garrett,
  • You're to put on the blue overall in the next fifteen minutes and wait for a blue truck on its way. Take the wristwatch and the earpiece. Conceal the gun inside the overall.
  • Yours faithfully,
  • The Secret.
  • There was a clear talk of him being killed if he disobeyed, and two days was enough to find out how capable and resourceful whoever this was. Besides, there was a lady in the house, he didn't really want her to get hurt.
  • Grey quickly had his breakfast, burnt the letters, then scribbled on a paper:
  • Out to work. Have whatever you need for breakfast. Keep the keys under the door when you're ready to leave. Take care.
  • He changed into the overall, stood by the roadside as instructed with the earpiece and watch in hand. Many who had seen him leave in that attire hailed as he walked to the road. Grey knew people mocked him, despised him, and even said funny things behind his back, but all that couldn't be compared to what he was currently engaged in. He would rather have an entire locality shouting at his back, and calling him a failure than for the world to know what he was becoming.
  • A blue van pulled over in front of him, the man driving was also in a blue overall but fatter. He nodded to some music playing on the radio, then turned to Grey. "Your dad, good man, aye. Saved me once."
  • Grey had no idea what he was talking about, he simply nodded, then got into the van as it drove off.
  • They had covered some distance when the man asked, "Cut me the bullshit right now and tell me who you are. Who are you, and who are the people you work for? Are you The Secret?"
  • The man had said the name. No other person was supposed to say it, and even if you wanted to, your mind was just enough to voice your own opinion without being heard.
  • "You boss me around like I'm some slave. Make me crazy with rush, then you threaten they will kill me."
  • Grey had no idea how to tell this man he was also a victim, or to shut up. He understood where this man came from, but he wasn't supposed to hint anything about this organisation. Grey got so scared he began looking around for a possible person with a gun when the message came through the earpiece, "Kill him."
  • Grey looked at the man who was still talking, and had no idea.
  • "Kill him, or someone would kill two of you."
  • Having made up his mind, and not wishing to die for another man's defiance, Grey paid one last attention to what the man was saying.
  • “What do they tell you now, huh? Talk to me, and don't let me ask again."
  • Grey looked at him, ready to say something, then it came out, "I'm sorry."
  • He took out the silencer, briskly aimed in the man's direction, and held the trigger, the man slumped on the steering.
  • Grey pushed him aside, took control of the swaying van, then steadied it...the earpiece told him his destination. He came to a stop before a twenty-story building with the name, The Setedus (Nigeria's biggest electronic company) written in gold. He pulled the fat man to the back of the van, then stepped onto the cemented floor.
  • The watch instructed him to go to the changing room and open locker two zero eight. Grey passed the security at the door, got into the locker room, walked passing lockers, and finally stopped at two zero eight…he pulled it open. Inside was a file, a neatly pressed suit, and a letter.
  • Grey took out the letter, then read:
  • Dear Mr. Grey Garrett,
  • You're to put this on, walk up to the manager and demand a job, placing the documents on the table.
  • Yours faithfully,
  • The Secret.
  • Grey changed into the suit, carried the file in hand, then left for the manager's office which was on the last floor. The secretary didn't let him sit but pointed him straight to the manager's office. Grey got in, the man was on the phone with someone, he thought to wait but the instruction was pretty plain.
  • He placed the files before the manager, then demanded a job. The man looked at him like one lost, and probably was about asking when he said...
  • "Let me call you back," the manager spoke into the phone, then replaced it on the table. He stared at Grey like someone who had really lost it...looked to the file, opened it, then began to flip through.
  • Moments later, the manager was shaking his head, Grey had no idea what he saw.
  • The man simply extended his hand to Grey who took it with a shake as he said, "You have the job, Mr. Garrett. You have the job."
