  • Reporting early to work the next day, Grey's manager was proud of him, and told him a certain message had come for him after he left the office, one which said he was to be in Topaz Hill today. Grey left the office before nine that morning, drove to Topaz Hill, the watch told him to stop at a certain gas station to refuel. Grey did, then drove on the orders of the watch—further into a village. He stopped at a compound with erected mud houses.
  • There, a dark lanky lady sat frying finely grounded cassava, an older lady peeling cassava, and a young man lying on a mat. "Ask for Patience Uba," the watch said, and Grey did. The lady peeling cassava said in a clear English manner, "I am."
  • "May I have a word?" Grey asked.
