Chapter 5

  • I shivered as cold water soaked my dirty, ripped gown. Fear took over me. What was going to happen to me if truly the Alpha had found out what happened to me? If he had done extensive research and found out I had lied about my identity, though I personally thought two days was too short to have found out information like that so quickly, I can’t underestimate the power of an alpha. Mama Lia, please save me. I have tried to live this long, but if truly the Alpha knew who I was, then only a miracle could save me. I need a miracle. Mama Lia, I prayed within me desperately. I didn’t know tears were already rolling down when I felt a hand come to wipe them off. I looked to see that it was Allura.
  • "Shh. It’s okay"
  • "Yes, it will be."
  • Allura comforted me.
  • The prison guard wanted to drag me away from them, an indication he didn’t want his kind coming close to me — their lifelong enemy. Allura glared at him, and he frowned.
  • "This guard really did hate him; was it a general hatred or a personal one? Did my people kill any of his family members, or was he just angry against the humans over the inhumane act towards the werewolf dom?" I thought.
  • I noticed Maeidan came to join in comforting me, and immediately she came close. I leaned closer to Allura so she wouldn’t understand. She noticed and went to sit back down. I peered through the space between the two other women and saw her facial expression; she was unbothered, like she didn’t care that I had rejected her comfort.
  • "Let the human wench go."
  • The guard announced it angrily.
  • "Hey, don’t you call her that," Allura shunned.
  • "Just let her go." "She has a visitor that’s waiting for her."
  • He pulled me from their embrace and proceeded to pull me towards the open entrance of the cell.
  • "Stop dragging her like that. She’s a person, not a goat that’s been taken for slaughter." Allura yelled.
  • "What if she’s been taken for slaughter? Maybe the Alpha has finally realized his mistake of letting her live and now wants to do to her as he’s been doing to her kind?" Maeden questioned.
  • "Will you shut it, Maeidan?" You’re more vile than those humans who hunted our kind and killed them."
  • Hailen angrily retorted.
  • I looked at Allura, who seemed quiet but whose body depicted anger; she looked like she would prefer to hold her hands rather than utter mere words at Meaidan, who, by the way, was unperturbed by the insults hurled at her by Hailen. I still heard her voice as I was dragged out.
  • "Stand here"
  • The guard commanded harshly and turned to lock the cell. Where else will I stand? Did he think I had plans to escape? It was obvious there was no place to escape to, and even if I tried, the chances of being caught were high, and my case would surely be worse because there was no way the Alpha would believe me anymore. Escaping was out of it. Whatever was going to happen now, I didn’t have a choice but to face it. He dragged me by my shackled hands and led me down dark hallways that still had cells and housed inmates, but they were all men. The Alpha must be an unforgiving, ruthless werewolf; if not, how come almost all the prisons were filled? I shivered again, not from the cold water I was drenched in but from the fear of the unknown. Where was I being led to?
  • "Is this not the bloody human they’ve been talking about?"
  • A certain male prisoner sneered. I didn’t know how fear turned to anger, and before I knew it, I retorted.
  • "Is he not the rejected prisoner condemned to death?"
  • I didn’t know if he was sentenced to death or not; it had just escaped my mouth.
  • The glare he sent my way was murderous, but I didn’t care; I just pulled my tongue at him and looked away. That was the first time I talked back to a werewolf. The guard didn't pay me or the prisoner any mind; he just kept pulling me along. We turned a corner, and I began to hear voices. It was not clear, but the tones were loud enough for me to hear one of the voices, maybe because it carried its usual authority or maybe because it was sort of the kind of voice one found hard to forget. The beating of my heart increased; I could almost feel it pounding its way out of my chest as we got closer. Maybe it was true; maybe the Alpha knew of my lies. I swallowed dry spittle; my head was light; warm tears were stinging; and I blinked countless times to ward them back. Mama Lia, please help me. Save me from the hands of this alpha. Please find a way to help me escape whatever doom is possibly waiting for me. My voices got clearer, and I could now fathom what was being discussed — me. I was the sole subject of their discussion. I wasn’t surprised; I was rather scared. What were they saying? I was roughly pulled into the room, but not fully into it.
  • "I need to understand who she is." "For the sake of the pack, we need to be careful."
  • He was arguing, but I couldn’t see who it was. My stomach felt the weight of my heart drop into it.
  • We stood at the entrance, unseen. The Alpha didn’t seem to be in a good mood. I looked at the guard; he stood motionless. I could see he was scared to interrupt the Alpha. I fixed my eyes on the Alpha; I couldn’t blame him. Anyone would be scared to interrupt him when he was in that mood. Did he ever smile? Or was he this scary all the time?
  • The guard cleared his throat, but it was quiet and shaky. The Alpha didn’t turn, and neither did the person he was talking to.
  • "Alpha"
  • He called a little bit louder this time.
  • He turned, and his gaze immediately fell on my face, and as usual, it made me want to run for the hills and even beyond them. I looked down immediately.
  • "She’s here"
  • I heard him say:
  • "Look up"
  • At his voice, I immediately raised my head. That authority wasn’t one to disobey. I raised my head; he shifted a little, and that was when I saw the person he had been talking to. I couldn’t believe my eyes; my knees buckled so much that even the guard had to hold me up. Was I seeing a vision? Was I hallucinating? Was my mind conjuring up things I really needed? If not, then why was I suddenly seeing Mama Lia?
