Chapter 24

  • Hailen’s POV
  • I came to, feeling a strong headache come on. I winced as the throbbing in my head got intense. Where was I? I shivered from the cold, brisk air. Wait, why was I seeing the stars and moon? This isn’t my room, and this isn’t Hazel’s room either. Hazel? My blood shot up as I suddenly remembered the girl I was supposed to be taking care of. The throbbing intensified, but it was the least of my worries. Where was she? I lifted myself from the cold, wet grass. My heart raced as my eyes scouted the wild, eerie darkness of the night. Oh, moon goddess, where was she? What had happened to her? My mind, in a flash, swiftly recollected what had transpired. We’d both been on a night stroll to ease her discomfort and provide her with some fresh air. I’d noticed a strange movement among the bushes, then it stopped. A while later, I no longer felt comfortable and decided to end the stroll and take her back. I'd had some weird, uneasy feeling that someone had been lurking in the dark, and she hadn’t been wrong. The panic I'd seen on Hazel’s face had caused my own fear to skyrocket. A figure had come up behind me, but before I could react, I’d been hit on the head. That was the last thing I remembered, until now. Now, where was Hazel? I panicked more as it dawned on me that she had been kidnapped.
  • The Alpha would kill me. He’d have my neck on a platter before the sun positioned itself in the sky a few hours from now. Aside from that, I really have come to like Hazel. The human had big, cautious eyes, but there was also some courage and perseverance hidden beneath those eyes in the shade of cornflower. The day she’d been brought into the cell, I had just known she was different from the rest of the humans. She wasn’t like her kind, and though she’d initially refused my friendship and Allura’s, we didn’t bother. We both understood what she must think of our kind and the harsh treatment meted out to her. She had a story, one I was yet to be aware of, but I wasn’t in a hurry. I wanted her to be comfortable before anything else. And there was also a reason why the Alpha was keeping her alive. The Alpha wasn’t known to exhibit soft-heartedness or leniency, especially towards humans. He’d countlessly ordered the execution of humans who’d accidentally or intentionally strayed into our pack — young or old. The Alpha wasn’t known to take decisions without thinking, and to some extent, it was quite stringent. So when I’d seen her in the cell with us, it had caused quite a stir amongst the three of us — Allura, Meaidan, and me. We’d been surprised to see a human thrown in the cell; it was unheard of. Her dirty clothes, her bony frame, her sunken, sad eyes, and the injured toe she’d tried to hide from the rest of the world were all proof of her pitiful ordeal, and my heart reached out to hers in an instant. When she was taken away, I thought it was over because she never came back. I had somehow thought the Alpha had finally decided to execute her like he'd done the rest of her kind. But when I was released and resumed my job at the manor, I heard the rumors. Words of what had happened during my time in the cell. How the Alpha's men had brought her in, dragged in by his Second in Command — the Beta—as the Ragel had raged and raved, typical of him. The rumors had gone further to include her undefined, hidden presence in the manor, but none had been able to know the exact place she was being kept, except for Zara. I don’t know why, but the sudden mention of that name twisted my nerves and made me boil with both fear and rage. It was obvious Zara had some very bad plans that were possibly aimed at Hazel. Was that why she’d planned to kidnap her? Who had kidnapped Hazel? Who had taken her, and for what reason? Was she part of some wicked plot ongoing? Or was she an innocent bait to lure the Alpha? But who would do such a thing? It was widely known that the Alpha had enemies. Being the ruler of the biggest and strongest pack in the whole of two regions and the second in the total of four regions was sure to bring enemies, plenty of them, but none of these enemies knew of Hazel, and even if they knew, why would they think that Hazel was something special to the Alpha, in the sense that kidnapping her would weaken the Alpha? They should have gone for his bitchy Luna Dizane, his overly pampered, busybody young female cousin Miran, or her brother, Zuri, who was always quiet with an incomprehensible character. Why Hazel? A total stranger with no ties whatsoever to the Alpha. I was crying; I didn’t know where to start searching for her. I didn’t even know where she’d been taken. I suddenly wished they’d taken me too. The fear of her being hurt and also the Alpha knowing she’d been outside were intensifying the fear within me. I wished I hadn’t brought up the idea of this night stroll; how would the Alpha believe me if I told him the truth? He might think I had a hand in it. That prospect was terrifying and made my stomach churn; I almost felt like throwing up. I staggered and tried to find her, desperately searching through the bushes even as a part of me knew it was futile; she was gone, and I had no idea where. I almost thought of running away, far away from this manor, far away from the wrath of the Alpha; I had disobeyed him. His instructions had been that no one should know Hazel’s whereabouts. Just a few hours on the job, and I had flopped terribly. But I couldn’t run away; Hazel might be in grave danger, and the Alpha was the only one who could save her. No matter the consequence I knew I’d face for disobeying the Alpha, my conscience wouldn’t let me keep silent and escape; Hazel needed to be saved. My gait was lopsided and unsteady, as though I were heavily inebriated. My eyes were unfocused, and I was sure if I could look into my own eyes, they’d be full of thoughts. I passed the small houses, rounded a corner, and was about to step into the light that directed the path towards the manor when I stumbled upon an obstacle. It wasn’t hard like the usual branches that always blocked these paths, and the shape piqued my curiosity. I blinked my eyes, and tears that blurred my vision rolled down my face. I swiped at them. That was when I saw that it was a body. The body of a female And it was dead and cold. Peering closer, I saw the bruised, disfigured face. The electrifying shock that ran through me as I covered my mouth to muffle my shriek was painfully overwhelming; it increased the pain in my head. The person lying lifelessly and in such a horrible state was none other than... Zara?
