Chapter 23

  • We walked through the fading light of the day. The sun was home now, asleep somewhere deep behind the horizon. The stars were out, all in their little silver glints, decorating the dark navy blue sky like shiny confetti in their monotonous forms. The air was balmy and breezy, and the trees swayed in whatever direction the night air took them. Leaves fell from their branches and were carried through the breeze to the nearest ground. The solid earth beneath my feet was cool, and I enjoyed the grassy feel of moist Bermuda grass tickling my underfoot. It was a long time ago when I felt this free. When I could just walk out into the beauty of each night and indulge in nature’s nightly mystical fantasies. Mama Lia once teased me about my obsession with night skies and silvery moons. I always felt drawn to them; even the glittering twinkles up there never ceased to enthrall me. I spread my arms and, on tiptoes, raised my face to the sky. Answering nature’s call as it beckoned to me. I heard the soft, teasing laugh of Hailen.
