Chapter 21

  • Zara was a spy? From who? Who was she sent to spy on? Was it me? This meant that she wasn’t a member of this pack. Or was she? Was that why she’d visited me? And who told her about me? Or maybe she was from the pack. Maybe someone who hated me was out to get me. Someone who knew I was still alive—a vengeful werewolf with a deep hatred for humans—wanted to kill me themselves. No wonder the Alpha had been extra icky and angry as a wet hen towards me. A spy meant someone was out to get him, or maybe it was me; I couldn’t tell. But it meant someone dangerous was out there, and maybe the Alpha understood the danger this new problem posed. Whether this Zara was out for me or him, it all still fell on him. Apart from Hailen and Zara, no one knew I was here, and if this situation made word get out, then he might be in trouble for it. Though he was the Alpha, there were rules even he couldn’t openly and carelessly overlook for the safety of his people. But if this issue had everything to do with him, then his life or that of his people were in possible harm’s way. I was scared for him, though I couldn't tell why because he’d been nothing but mean and vile to me. I somehow felt the responsibility he had to bear and the dragging weight of it, even for a soul he despised — me.
  • The thick, tasty soup filled with vegetables and meat was temporarily forgotten, and I fully focused on Hailen, my eyes urging her to say more.
  • "I don’t know much, Hazel. Moreover, if the Alpha hears me telling you things I’m very certain he doesn’t want the human girl to know, he’ll kill me."
