• Carmen tried to open her eyes, but it was dark. Something was blocking her view. When she tried to move her arms and legs, they were immobile. ‘Mommy? Daddy?’ she called out.
• ‘Hey, she’s awake. Go see what she wants,’ she heard someone say.
• ‘So you’re smart, right? If you behave while we wait for your parents to give us the money, we will give you back to them,’ a male voice said. ‘Don’t bother running away, or I will hurt you.’
