Chapter 3 On My Knees

  • For you my dear, I can go against the world. So what it is to go in the Beast's cave to sacrifice myself to save you from the cruel world.
  • -Rain
  • RAIN POV
  • How does it feels when your whole world comes crashing down. That one phone call had made my heart beating faster as I raced through the roads never caring about the traffic lights or the speed board.
  • My Amber! Her face, her smile, her tears and everything else. All the sweet memories were coming in front of my eyes. Like the first time when she was handed to me after two months of serious observation, how she wrapped her tiny fingers around my middle finger.
  • Or how the first time she walked or played in the park. How we use to sneak in the kitchen at night under the nose of Nana to eat ice cream. It was all coming back.
  • "Amber is fine Rain. She is your daughter, she is a brave girl.", I said to myself as I drove through the streets.
  • She has to be alright. Their is so much for us to do and accomplish. Oh god, if ever I have made a mistake punish me for it but don't make my child suffer. Please God, please.
  • Soon I found myself parking my car. I got down on my clumsy feet and dashed to the reception. Never in my life I have run so fast. But what can one say, life takes unexpected turns.
  • "Amber Carter.", I said in a small voice to the receptionist. My voice was hoarse and quivering. I never wanted to come to a hospital again and definitely not to meet my daughter. The smell of medicines always made me want to puke. I couldn't bare the sight seeing my three year old in ICU.
  • "Ma'am! Hello?", the receptionist asked definitely confused. I was too deep in my thoughts to have listened to her voice.
  • "Yes.", I said looking in her direction now providing her with my full attention.
  • "May I know your relationship with Ms. Amber?", she asked in a business like tone.
  • "I am her mother.", I replied politely. She nodded her head and then furiously typed something on the computer.
  • "Second floor, third corridor, emergency segment.", she replied in a monotone.
  • I quickly took the stairs and dashed to the second floor. I looked for a direction chart but it was confusing and time consuming so I asked one of the ward boys.
  • "Sir can you tell me in which direction is the emergency room?", I asked a boy with pimples decorating his face.
  • "Just take a right and go straight.", he said dismissing me.
  • I muttered a quick thank you and followed his directions. On my way I could see different types of people and families. Some were anxious to know what was wrong with them. Others were grieving at the loss of their loved ones and some others had tears of happiness after knowing that their loved ones were safe.
  • Soon I could make out two figures siting anxiously outside the ICU. One was my nana who was saying most probably scolding herself and other one was my nanu who was gently supporting his wife.
  • I went to both of them. As soon as they saw me they stood up. Now seeing the broken expression on the face of my Nana I could not hold back my tears.
  • "What's wrong wi-ith her?", I asked in between of my sobs. Nana pulled me in her chest. This was what I needed at that moment. Just some warmth to my cold heart.
  • Once I have calmed down I looked at nanu expecting an answer to my previous question.
  • "The doctor is not ready to tell anything at this moment.", nanu said to me and I nodded my head in understanding.
  • After that he explained me everything from how she fainted while playing in the home and her pulses could be barely felt to the doctors rushing her to the ICU.
  • The only good part was that Dr. Khan who was handling Amber and my cases from the very beginning was handling this case right now. Thus it meant he knew a lot about Amber and it would be easy for him to operate her.
  • As still no news of Amber was available, I contacted Sam to inform him about everything because hiding something like this from Sam was not a wise idea. Also he was good at providing moral support.
  • Soon he arrived at the hospital and pulled me in a bear hug.
  • "Amber is going to be alright doll.", Sam whispered in my ears.
  • I really hope so Sam. I really hope so.
  • The time was passing painfully slow. Doctors were not ready to say anything. What could be so wrong with my baby? I was not even allowed to see her.
  • Sam squeezed my shoulder in a reassuring way. I passed him a weak smile. Their was nothing more I could do. I can't be weak. I need to stay strong for everyone.
  • Soon Dr. Khan came out and cleared his throat. He looked towards me in recognition.
  • "We are in some serious problem Ms. Carter.", he addressed to me.
  • "What is wrong with Amber?", I questioned him.
  • He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
  • "Ms. Amber have some sick amenia cells in her spine. It is degrading the bone marrow in her spine. We need to perform a bone marrow transplant as soon as possible.", Dr. Khan explained making a sympathetic face.
  • Bone marrow transplant that too of my daughter. Oh my God. My poor baby is to suffer so much.
  • "Is it because she was born premature?", I questioned him.
  • "Maybe yes but maybe because of genetics.", he replied.
  • It is my fault my baby is suffering. It is all my fault.
  • "We don't have much time. We need to quickly perform the bone marrow transplant. For this we will need the bone marrow of the father or mother.", he stated.
  • "I can give the bone marrow.", I stated. Their was no way I would let her father help us.
  • The doctor looked at me and then went deep in his thoughts as if analysing something. But what he said next was not something I was expecting.
  • "Your body is too weak Ms. Carter for the operation. Bone marrow removal is not something your body would take fairly well. We will prefer the father's bone marrow.", Dr. Khan explained the current situation.
  • Cold beads of sweat started forming on my forehead. How will I do that.
  • "Is there no other way around?", Sam questioned.
  • I looked at Dr. Khan expectedly. Maybe he would say yes there is another way. I was ready to do anything but asking Damien was out of box.
  • All my hopes were shattered when the doctor shook his head.
  • "What ever you need to do make it quick. We don't have much time.", he told me while I stared at him.
  • "Can I meet her?", I asked hopefully. Meeting my bundle of joy would definitely make me stronger.
  • "I am sorry. You can't meet her right now. She is under observation."
  • Saying this Dr. Khan turned to leave.
  • "What should we do now?"
  • Nana's loud voice made me flinch. What should we do now? This was no question. The question should have been, how we do it now.
  • "I will make Damien Black come here.", I stated with determination.
  • "How will you do that Rain?", Sam questioned.
  • "He is a beast. He had no emotions. He would never help you even for the sake of his own blood and flesh.", nanu said.
  • Maybe they all were right. Maybe he would never be ready to help. But for my daughter I would do it. Even if I need to be on my knees, begging to him, I would do it in a heart beat. Anything for my daughter. Anything for her life.
  • It was currently 10 o'clock. How did the night passed, no one knows. Waiting for any news about Amber. Anxiously waiting to meet my daughter. The night passed some how and now I was standing in front of Black Enterprise.
  • The building looked the same but the receptionist was different.
  • "I need to meet Damien Black.", I stated in a hurry.
  • "Ma'am do you have an appointment?", she asked me but I had no time for a conversation.
  • "Listen, I have no appointment with him but my meeting him is very important. My daughter's life depends on this meeting.", I practically begged her as tears gathered in my eyes thinking about my daughter. Why couldn't I be stronger?
  • She passed me a look of sympathy then called someone. After some hush whispers she nodded to me as I dashed to his room.
  • It took me exactly five minutes to reach his cabin. I took a deep breath and them knocked thrice on the door.
  • "Come in."
  • Came his deep voice. I took another deep breath and twisted the knob. There was he sitting behind his desk directly looking at me.
  • "You have five minutes.", he said with an emotionless face.
  • The time when he slapped me played in my memories and I mentally flinched. What if he does that again. I shook my head and started.
  • "My name is Rain. Four years ago I told you that I was pregnant with your daughter. I was not lying to you and right now as we talk, she is in the hospital fighting from death. Please, she is in immense need of your bone marrow.", I completed while a traitor tear slipped down my cheek. My baby can't die.
  • He got up from his chair and stretched his arms. Then he lazily asked me,"Why should I trust you?"
  • "Please right now I have nothing to make you trust me but at least get the DNA test done. Please it is for the sake of my daughter.", I begged him.
  • "So it is a girl.", he stated thoughtfully.
  • I simply nodded my head.
  • I have to make him up. He has to come me. How so ever.
  • I was so deep in thought that I didn't realize that he has moved closer to me. He was extremely tall. More than a foot taller than me.
  • I just prayed he didn't feel mistreating me again. Because this time I would have no choice.
  • Just like six years ago with him.
  • "I don't understand if you care so much about your daughter then why you are here?", Damien asked coldly.
  • Because she is even your child imbecile.
  • "I.."
  • Before I could say anything Damien cut me.
  • "Or you are just another slut who is here for my money. No care for her daughter. Just here so that the paparazzi follows us and you can gain popularity.", he stated accusingly.
  • My mouth was ajar.
  • Did he think so low of me?
  • "Please just come with me and get the DNA test done. I am not lying."
  • I joined my hands and begged him as tears continuously fell down from my eyes.
  • He sighed as he rubbed his temples.
  • His face was stoic so I didn't know if he was annoyed.
  • He brought his hand up and I flinched back and closed my eyes waiting for the impact.
  • But it never came.
  • Instead he gently placed his on my left cheek. I immediately opened my eyes at the foreign touch.
  • He was wiping my tears with his thumb. I was shocked at his action.
  • "You cry way too much woman. So weak and so easily breakable.", he said the last part softly.
  • "So you will be with me?", I asked hopefully and he nodded his head.
  • I sighed in relief.
  • I am coming my baby. Just hold on.
  • "Let's go.", I said hurriedly. But Damien didn't even move a millimetre.
  • "Wait.", he called out.
  • I turned around never meeting his eyes and just looking at his clothed chest.
  • "But I have a condition.", Damien stated. My heart started pounding harder. I just nodded my head. My throat was too tight to say anything.
  • "If you are proved wrong then you will spend a night with me.", Damien stated.
  • "Alright.", I stated.
  • I wasn't worried because I knew I wasn't wrong but still a thought lingered in my mind, why is he like a puzzle?
  • Also is he really the person I gave my virginity to?
