Chapter 8

  • "When you're sad, and no one knows it, I’ll send you black roses [...]."- The Rasmus, 'Ten Black Roses'.
  • As the doctor had expected, Rita recovered very quickly. The very next day the head wound healed completely, so the stitches were removed. Two days later, the cast disappeared from her arms and legs, then also ribs and the rest of her body, as well as the neck collar and spine protection. Over the weekend, the doctors did some additional check-ups, but her body was completely healthy. On Monday morning Rita was discharged from the hospital, and on Tuesday she was with the rest of her family in New York.
  • In the evening, Rita was lying down on the bed in her room, thinking about the events that took place recently. Suddenly, Madeline stormed into the room and jumped on the bed, lying next to her.
  • - Do you want to sleep with me tonight? You missed me so much?- Rita asked half-jokingly, looking at her sister.
  • - Nah... I just wanted to talk about something.- said Madeline, smiling broadly.- You know, I just heard mom and dad talking in the living room...- she started.
  • - And you know it's not nice to eavesdrop?- Rita interjected, remarking it with a slight amusement.
  • - I know... But I swear I've heard everything by accident while going to the kitchen to drink some milk.- Madeline explained thoroughly.- But listen, because it's interesting, and is about you.- she pointed out, and Rita just nodded.- Apparently the doctor said that you healed so quickly because you might have some kind of gift of quick tissue regeneration.- added Madeline.
  • - Oh, really? That's interesting... But when I cut myself, my wound heals normally. Also, about three years ago, I broke my arm and I was wearing a cast for a month, so that theory doesn't fit a bit here...- said Rita.
  • - Well, yeah, it's true...- agreed Madeline.- But that doctor have supposedly seen something similar before.- she added.
  • - Eh, I don't know.- Rita sighed.- If this theory with the gift is at least half true, then mine seems to only work when I am undergoing clinical death. The last time I was recovering so quickly 6 years ago, after a car accident in which my parents died.- she said sadly. Tears pressed into her eyes at the mention of this.
  • Madeline said nothing, just put her arm around her sister and hugged tightly.
  • ~~~~~~
  • He found the girl's house without any problems. All the doors and windows were closed, but that was no problem for him. Under the influence of telekinesis, the lock immediately released and the window swung open. Noiselessly he went inside, hiding his wings, the gaze lingered on the girl who was sleeping on the bed, carefully covered with a duvet. He sat on the edge of the bed, pushed back the hair that had fallen over her face, and stared at the girl for a while.
  • She was alive. And quite healthy. He managed to save her even though it was the first time he had used his healing powers. It made him very happy. Suddenly the girl's face twisted under the influence of the nightmare. She began to gently flutter in the sheets while speaking some slurred words.
  • - Rita...- he whispered, lightly touching the sleeping girl's cheek, again using his power.- Let your nightmares disappear. Sleep well.- he added. She calmed down almost immediately, falling back into a deep sleep.
  • He got up from her bed and walked over to the bedside table. From the sleeve of the elegant white shirt he was wearing, like a professional magician, he suddenly took out a black rose and placed it on the table, along with a note written in his elegant handwriting. Then he looked again at the sleeping girl and went out the window onto the roof, spread his huge white wings, which already had a slightly grayish tinge, and flew away.
  • ~~~~~~
  • Rita woke up in the morning feeling refreshed. There was no nightmare that haunted her during the night, and she not even once woke up. Rita thanked God that had somehow saved her from it.
  • When she rose slightly and sat down on the bed, her eyes, as usual, went to the alarm clock on the bedside table which showed nine in the morning. Normally, during the school year, she was already at school at this time. Fortunately, there were still a few days of summer vacation left. But Rita's attention was caught by something lying beside the alarm clock. It was a rose with black stalk and petals, only slightly glistening with dew.
  • She took the strange flower gently in her hand and studied it carefully. Rita then realized that it was not the dew that glistened on the rose petals, but something more like tiny diamonds. Suddenly the wonderful scent of the flower hit her nostrils. Rita had the strange feeling that she knew this scent from somewhere, but it seemed impossible. As she got out of bed and put the rose back on the table, noticed a tiny note, folded in half, next to the alarm clock. Rita took it and unfolded slowly. The note was filled with perfectly calligraphed letters.
  • "Dearest Rita,
  • Forgive me for coming to your home at night, like a thief, but I just wanted to make sure you were okay.
  • I was filled with great joy when I found you safe and sound.
  • Leaving you then, in this meadow, I acted mean, so I am begging you for forgiveness.
  • I'd like you to know that I was in a huge quandary, but I couldn't have done otherwise.
  • Your Guardian Angel."
  • Rita read these words several times, not understanding anything of this weird situation. She had very mixed feelings and didn't even know what to think about it. After all, someone broke into the house, walked into her room, looked at her while she was sleeping, for some reason left that rose and a note... From what Rita read it was quite clear that this was the same man who had saved her after she fell off the cliff. It was actually normal for him to want to know if he had managed to help her, but why didn't this person just showed up normally? Why didn't he knock on the door during the day, introducing himself? Why did he come, or rather crept, into her room at night? And finally, how did he get inside when windows and doors were blocked at night? If he broke in, the alarm would surely go off... So how did he got into her room? Rita had to admit that she would like to meet that mysterious "Guardian Angel", because she would like to know how he managed to save her back then, on the cliff. Rita had a feeling that she was not the one with some kind of 'gift', but rather her savior was, and he used it to save her life. However, the way this person crept into her room at night made her a little bit scared. She wasn't sure if this rose and its scent was safe for her. Maybe this "Guardian Angel" was some kind of stalker?
  • Rita was totally confused by this. She hid the rose and the note in one of the drawers of the nightstand, not wanting to think about it right now. It was too strange, and a little scary, although she had to admit it was also a bit fascinating. But Rita quickly shook off those thoughts, and then went to the bathroom to take a shower and slowly get ready for today.
