Chapter 2

  • Author’s P.O.V.
  • It was graduation day of Nathan. Though he was known as all arrogant but he had a soft corner for his family.
  • While expecting for a miracle to happen, he got ready. So when his phone rang off flashing the caller ID of his Mom on the phone screen, he answered it automatically.
  • Before he could say something, a not so sincere voice came into his hearing.
  • “Nathan, Congratulations on your brilliant result dear. We wanted to attend the ceremony but an urgent meeting came up. Sorry baby but we need to get to the meeting.” Hearing his mom saying this, Nathan closed his eyes.
  • He was not trying to control his anger though. Rather he was trying to utter all normally, “It is okay Mom. You guys continue.”
  • Mary Edward, his Mom uttered again, “Okay, dear. Got to go. Bye.”
  • Cutting off the line, Nathan sat on his bed. It was not happening for the first time that his parents were giving priority to something over him.
  • He was used to it from the very beginning of his life. Earlier he was never of demanding type for anything just keeping some small wishes within only to get disappointed every time.
  • Which only made him this arrogant and heartless. But at least he thought they would attend his graduation function. Just with this hope, he studied really hard to obtain a good result. He succeeded in his efforts but the expectation, he had remained an expectation only this time also.
  • Making him feel worthless and wrong as always. He will be on stage taking a medal for excellence with none of his expected ones to clap for him in the crowd in front of the stage.
  • He would get a party going back home about that he was sure but that would be only for show off. It was not unknown to him also but he would be silent.
  • He would go on acting all okay having his family members around only to crave some care, attention and love from them but getting nothing in return and becoming more arrogant.
  • Giving his gloomy thoughts a break, he forwarded towards his college to attend the Graduation function all alone.....

  • Amelia was sadly sitting on her bed with the family photograph in her hand when her Mom, Jiana entered the room. Seeing her like that, Jiana spoke up, "Amelia, do fast your packing dear. We need to leave this house by this evening.”
  • Keeping the photo in the bag, she uttered sadly, “Where will we go, Mom? We have nowhere to go now.”
  • Stella got uttering then, “I have talked to some people. I will manage something, dear. But for now we have to leave from here first.”
  • Amelia was feeling all guilty being unable to help her Mom in anything who was struggling for their survival facing the reality after her Dad passing away.
  • She tried to get some job like waitress or delivery girl but Stella strongly rejected that. Getting their all things, they left the apartment when it was almost evening.
  • The weather was all cloudy. While dragging their bags, they started walking thoughtlessly by the roads until the lightning and thunder sounds got into their hearings.
  • They both looked at each other helplessly but kept walking. Jiana kept looking all around to find a place to stand not to get drenched in case it started raining.
  • To get their situation worse and thought come true, with the last lightning, it started raining cats and dogs and got them soaked in rain in no minute.
  • Then a place came to their sight. Without bothering to think anything, they forwarded towards the place. Stella got out a towel and forwarded it towards Amelia to dry her and she took another for herself. It looked like a cottage where they got standing waiting for the rain to stop.
  • But it looked like it was not going to get stopped anytime soon. Leaning against the bags, they sat at a corner. After some time they heard a voice from the back, “Hey, who are you? What are you doing here?”
  • Both mother and daughter got up immediately. The owner of the voice was an old aged lady. She gave a scrutinising look to them with the bags behind and then spoke up, “Homeless?” before they could say something.
  • Amelia turned her head to the bags whereas Stella nodded at that old woman only to get her uttering again, “Will you work at a house?”
  • Amelia immediately turned to that old woman and then to her Mom but before she could say anything, the woman spoke up, “You will get handsome payment.”
  • Without bothering to think much, Stella spoke up immediately, “I will.”
  • Amelia tried to stop her Mom but Stella held her hand to get her to stop instead. The old woman again spoke up, “Do you have any experience?”
  • Stella spoke up again, “No. But I can manage.” and gave her a hopeful look. She was not in a condition to be picky for a job. Anything would do. Anything would be better than spending nights on the road, homeless.
  • The old woman got uttering, “Okay then. Come inside.” and gave them way in as she got inside the house. While taking them to a room, she spoke up, “I am Kaira, the head of the servants of Edward Mansion. I will take you two to Mrs Edward tomorrow morning.”
  • Stella nodded at her. Kaira stopped in front of a room and opening the door, she got uttering, “This is your room. Now rest.”
  • They entered the room and Kaira left from there. As soon as she left, Amelia spoke up, “Mom, how can say yes to work as a housemaid?”
  • Stella spoke up trying to get her convinced, “The woman seemed nice, dear. She did not even know us but still she forwarded a helping hand. And besides, other than this, I can’t do other job dear. You will stay in the room. I will work only. When I will save some money, you can join your college and fulfil your dream. You get that?”
  • Amelia tried to say otherwise but Jiana uttered her name, "Amelia!” in a way, Amelia could not get uttering anything being an obedient daughter.
  • Stella again spoke up then, “Go freshen up. I think that is a washroom.” and pointed at a door. Getting her clothes, Amelia made her way to the washroom.
  • When she got out, Stella got to freshen up. Amelia looked all around the room. It was somewhat large room with a bed in the middle, a small closet on the wall, a window and a small attached washroom.
  • Enough for two of them to live. Giving her mother's word a thought, Amelia decided something. She would help her in work. When her mother got out, she voiced her thought out.
  • Stella tried to say otherwise like earlier but Amelia uttered, “Mom, I am already feeling all guilty on top of that I can’t just sit in the room when you will be working. I do not have anything to do here. And this way we can save more money and I can join college earlier.”
  • Stella was well aware why Amelia was behaving like this. Joining college earlier was not her intention but helping her.
  • As much as she wanted to refuse, seeing her daughter's desperate face, she could not get herself to disagree with her and nodded with a sad smile.
  • They got on the bed and drifted to sleep soon being all tired, praying for a new morning with some hope.
  • Little did they know what type of morning was waiting for them.....
