Chapter 9

  • Maverick's POV:
  • 6 pm read the time as I looked at my Louis Monet Meteoris wristwatch. I rubbed my face and exhaled. Just then, I felt my neck and realized I'd been wearing the black tie. I pulled on the tie and took off my neck. I gathered the files on my desk and stretched my neck a little. My phone began to ring on the table. I looked at the screen, it was Levi calling. I tiredly took the phone and swiped over the phone to answer before placing it close to my ear.
  • "What's up man, you still at work?" Levi asked over the phone.
  • " Yes, I'll head home soon" I answered him massaging my forehead lightly to calm the headache that was already making its way.
  • "What? We are supposed to head out tonight, what's up with you?" He queried as if I wasn't the one who requested to see him.
  • " I'm just tired that's all" I responded calmly
  • "I'm on my way to your office though, I'm close. You better not go anywhere" He cautioned.
  • Talking about Levi coming over, I remembered how I didn't give Maya any file for Levi to sign, I only asked her to text him. I would just gather the documents and give him directly when he came to my office.
  • "Okay fine. I have a few documents for you to sign too"
  • "You never take any break from work" He laughed a little, one filled with sarcasm.
  • "That reminds me Mav" as if forgetting something he had wanted to say. "How about the contract with Nike, did he sign it? "
  • Mtcheew! I sighed lightly to myself.
  • "We'll talk about that when you arrive".
  • "Okay, I'm close," he said and hung up.
  • I made sure to gather all documents for Levi and kept them aside in one file. If I could, I would have worked till 10 pm but I was exhausted I wouldn't even work another hour, I literally was struggling with energy. All I wanted was to go home to my penthouse and rest.
  • I stood up from behind the desk and picked up the jacket I'd abandoned earlier on the couch and slipped my hands in. Then I adjusted it properly. I wondered if Maya had gone home. Sometimes she worked real late and I went home before her.
  • I picked up the file for Levi on my desk and walked out of the office to Maya's office. I knocked before opening the door.
  • When I walked in, she was glued to her laptop, she almost didn't notice when I walked in.
  • "I'll leave soon" I announced and she almost jumped out of her skin.
  • "Sir?" Her eyes widen.
  • "What is wrong with you today?" I asked my head askew. She shook her head in a way to say nothing was wrong.
  • "Well, I'm leaving soon," I said again and sighed looking at her head to toe. I left shutting the door behind me.
  • Maya acted like she was up to something, could she? I thought but I shut the thoughts off my head, I didn't want to be assuming things especially not about Maya. I trusted her enough.
  • I walked through the corridor to the facade of the elevator and then waited for it to open since someone was in. 3 seconds and it beeped swiping itself open.
  • "Heyyyy.." Levi greeted hugging me. I couldn't help but smile and hug him back.
  • "You arrived early," I said releasing myself from his hug.
  • " I told you I was close" He observed for a second. "What's that in your hand?"
  • " The documents you need to sign for the Hawaii project," I said handing the file over to him.
  • "Ooh, thanks. I'll sign them all, thanks." He said and then he smiled.
  • We both got back into the elevator and Levi pressed the button then the elevator engine began to run almost silently.
  • "Did you get that contract? You didn't sound like you did earlier" Levi looked at me waiting for my response.
  • "He said I had to be married."
  • " Mr. Philip said that?" Levi asked with surprise. Even I was surprised when Mr. Philip talked about marriage before the contract. I nodded.
  • "Talking about marriage, and about the girl, you went to meet. How is she?" Levi asked "I mean your new bride " He elaborated.
  • "New bride indeed," I said.
  • " Did you not like her? Is she hot?" Levi asked. The elevator stopped at the ground floor and slid itself open and we both got out walking towards Levi's car. I knew Levi wouldn't stop until he got all the information he wanted.
  • "Well, I saw her. She appears to be very much naive and timid for my liking. She's not even that fine" I mumbled.
  • "Ooh, I see. So?" He peered at me.
  • "Nothing, what do you mean by so? I'll marry the girl. After all, I need the contract with Nike plus I can't risk this peace being at war with my family" I inhaled then exhaled "You know how my mom is sometimes, I can't fight with her and win "
  • "I think I understand. I know how our parents her. Do you know my father has gone to meet with the Senator, he wants me to marry his daughter" Levi lamented.
  • "What? Which of his daughters?"
  • " Emily" Levi blurted out. I didn't help the laughter in my throat so I let it out.
  • "What? Emily?" I held Levi's shoulder and laughed more, I felt a little relief, I would prefer Natalie to Emily no matter what conditions were given. Emily was a spoilt brat, a very insulting one as of that. "I'm sorry man, why Emily? Sophia is better off"
  • " Are you seriously asking that? Emily is the first daughter and besides Sophia is engaged, I heard. My father wants presidential support, and I think only the Senator can give him that" Levi finished.
  • "I'm sorry that laughter came out, I couldn't help it. You are going to live with the devil, I wish you luck" I rubbed his shoulder.
  • "She might be different, who knows. Somehow I feel it" Levi said. He seemed a bit smitten.
  • "What are you thinking?"
  • "I don't know, nothing." Levi smiled slightly. Sometimes Levi was unpredictable but mostly he made the decisions one would call 'the right ones'. He was an intelligent person. The reason we became friends in 10 grade and ever since then we kept our cool.
  • "Are we going in your car?" I asked
  • "Yes, I guess. You can ask Eric to go home"
  • I called Eric and asked him to go home and come pick me up the next morning for work.
  • "Where are we going?" I asked
  • "There's a new bar, a club I think downtown, the manager invited me to come and check the place, I heard it has a good rating," Levi said and shrugged.
  • "Okay, but we won't stay long" I warned.
  • "Fine, let's go" Levi said hoping unto his white Rolls-Royce Cullinan. I followed after him.
