Chapter 4 Withdrawing a Confession

  • Keira couldn’t get the answer just by observing Tyler’s expression, but the answer in her heart was sinking.
  • It was as if she had stepped into quicksand as she slowly sank until she was completely covered in it, suffocating.
  • Tyler stared at her and uttered dispassionately, “You’ll never get the answer if you don’t take a look.”
  • Honestly speaking, he was quite displeased at the way she looked at him.
  • Keira fell silent and hesitated for a bit before opening the document. Right after she took a look at the first page, a sense of surprise flashed across her eyes. Following that, her heart started pounding against her chest.
  • After rapidly but thoroughly going through the entire document, she gasped.
  • Raising her head, she stared fixedly at the man before her eyes and said with displeasure, “Where did you get this information from? Do you think I’ll believe what’s written on it?”
  • Tyler narrowed his eyes and spoke in a light tone, which was like a puff of smoke that might disappear at any moment. “No one has dared to doubt me before. You’re the first one, Miss Whitlaw.”
  • “So what? I will never believe you,” Keira replied steadfastly.
  • After that, Tyler rose from the chair and shot her a disdainful look. “If you don’t believe me, you’ll practically send yourself to hell. I’ll give you two days to think it through. I’ll still come at the same time two days later.”
  • Upon finishing his words, he swiftly turned around and tucked one hand into his pocket before leaving the detention room.
  • Keira watched him leave as her eyes felt somewhat painful.
  • What’s going on? Am I really not my dad’s biological daughter? Is that the reason he’s got the heart to make me take the fall?
  • She raised her head and looked at the palm-sized window in the ceiling. The sunlight was so dazzling and hurtful that she couldn’t help but start crying. “Perhaps no father in this world would do such a thing to his daughter…”
  • All of a sudden, she started laughing as her tears slid down her face.
  • Not only did she have to go to jail in her father’s stead, but she’d also have to go through an unbearable pain that had been inflicted upon her, both physically and psychologically.
  • Until now, she still couldn’t imagine how terrible it must be when she lost her virginity.
  • Now, she was left with nothing else but pain and sorrow.
  • “Demon… I’ll never let you off!” Keira said through clenched teeth. As she balled up her fists, her arms could be seen trembling slightly. At the same time, her heart felt both heavy and painful.
  • In the same hour two days later, the man, who was clad in a black suit, arrived at this place again.
  • Inside the detention room, when Tyler saw Keira, who was clothed in a gray prison uniform, he realized that she looked more haggard than when he met her two days ago.
  • So, it was apparent that she had been conflicted within her heart for the past two days. Sometimes, the torture on one’s soul was worse than that on one’s body.
  • In fact, he could feel her.
  • “Have you made up your mind, Miss Whitlaw?” Tyler glanced at her and asked directly.
  • After a moment of silence, Keira replied, “I have to find out my real identity.”
  • He gave her a look and uttered impassively, “I’m sorry, but I’m not an investigator. I’ve told you the beginning of the story. If you want to find out the ending, you have to find out about it yourself. Now, just tell me—will you withdraw your confession?”
  • She stared at him with widened eyes as this man gave her an invisible pressure.
  • Does he think he has the final say here?
  • Ignoring her stare, he went on to mock her by saying, “If you don’t get out, how will you resolve the doubts in your heart? Are you really willing to be someone else’s tool?”
  • As expected, Keira was enraged by what he had just said as her eyes suddenly turned glacial. “No! I, Keira Whitlaw, will never be someone else’s tool!”
  • The man curled up his lips and stared at her. Her face is indeed quite pleasing to the eyes.
  • “So, what do you say?”
  • “I’ll withdraw my confession!”
  • Tyler then uttered in a lowered and masculine voice, “Alright, I’ll handle the rest. Just wait here patiently.”
  • He rose from the chair and turned around without uttering anything else.
  • Just then, an anxious voice could be heard from behind him. “Who are you? Why do you want to help me? What’s your motive?”
  • The man stopped in his tracks but didn’t turn his head as he replied impassively, “My target isn’t you but Kennedy Whitlaw!”
  • In fact, he didn’t have to hide anything, as he had been getting prepared for a long time to achieve this goal.
  • After he finished speaking, he shuffled out of the detention room, leaving behind a stunned woman.
  • “Who on earth is he?” Keira murmured. The man’s figure seemed to be engulfed in a dark fog, so she could never see through him.
  • ...
  • One week later, the trial began. The most famous lawyer in Ashford City, Anthony Jackson, was there to defend Keira. Moreover, she had withdrawn her confession in court. Eventually, she was released because there wasn’t enough evidence to charge against her. On the other hand, her father, Kennedy, was suspected of committing a crime, so an arrest warrant had been issued by the judge.
  • However, he had already gotten wind of the news and fled with a bag full of cash.
