Chapter 26 Promises

  • Early the next morning on the 2nd of September Nolan and I were headed to the site. Even without touching him, I could see the tension in his shoulders. This was the 5th month, sure it was still the beginning of the month but any delay in the construction was possible doom for him. Not only would Douglas take all of his properties but he would have nowhere to start from, no one to turn to. Even during the opening ceremony two days ago, with his hands on my waist, smiling at the invited guests and friends I could tell he was worried. This morning I wouldn’t hear of him leaving alone, so I tagged along with him for support. He feebly protested that this was his cross to bear but I wasn’t having any of his protests. Now he glanced at me with gratitude and I smiled, squeezing his hand.
  • When we pulled up on the site only a handful of workers with bright yellow helmets milled around the half-finished hotel. The 11th floor was half done. One of the men holding a board and scribbling on a paper tacked to it looked up when we came out of the car and approached us.
  • “What is happening? Where is everyone?” Nolan asked. His voice was strained.
